Women's Open Championship: Prediction, Tips and Odds

The final women’s golf Major of the year takes place in Scotland this week when the historic surroundings of the Old Course at St Andrews hosts the Women’s Open Championship.

America’s Lilia Vu defends the crown she won at Walton heath last year at the venue where the tournament was last held in 2013 and Japan’s Ayaka Furue will be hoping she can build on the victory she claimed the last time one of the game’s biggest prizes was up for grabs at the Evian Championship last month.

Women’s Open betting tips and predictions

Ayaka Furue - 12/1

This year’s Women’s Open looks to be extremely competitive with plenty of players in with a strong shout of winning the year’s final Major, which is a situation that might not have been envisaged six months ago.

Then, America’s Nelly Korda was playing some unbelievable golf and was literally taking on everyone in front of her as she claimed a remarkable six victories in seven events.

It seems others would be playing for second place for most of the time, but the world number one has had her struggles recently and heads to St Andrews having missed the cut in three of her last five events, including the Women’s US Open and the PGA Championship.

So it may be a bit of a leap of faith to support her to get things right in Fife and others look to have stronger claims.

It is also worth recalling that, unlike the men’s equivalent tournament, the Women’s Open is not played exclusively on links layout.

So while defending champion Lilia Vu heads into the tournament in strong form after a win in the LPGA Classic last month and second at the PGA Championship, her triumph at Walton Heath 12 months ago was on a vastly different test.

Therefore preference is for Japanese star Ayaka Furue to follow up on her success at the previous Major, the Evian Championship which was played in France last month, and claim another of the game’s big prizes.

While she has not finished higher than 20th in her three previous attempts to win this tournament, her third spot at last week’s Scottish Open at Dundonald will have given her lots of links confidence and she looks geared for a bold bid.

Xiyu Lin - 25/1

One player who could make a decent impression is China’s Xiyu Lin, who has demonstrated before that she can handle a links layout and should head to St Andrews with confidence after claiming a bronze medal at the Paris Olympics.

She does not have a strong Women’s Open record, but she played well on her debut at St Andrews in 2013 when a 17th-placed finish was no disgrace, and she also has a couple of strong finishes in the Scottish Open where she was ninth in 2019 and seventh in 2020.

That strong performance at Le Golf National should stand her in good stead and she has the potential to get into the mix.

Minjee Lee - 35/1

One player who should not be ruled out of the equation is 2022 US Women’s Open Minjee Lee, who has had an indifferent season by her standards but could still put herself right in the frame.

Finishing 12th at last week’s Scottish Open was a welcome return to form, even though she slipped down the leaderboard in the closing stages after posting a fourth-round 78, and the Australian has demonstrated her aptitude for links golf in recent Opens.

While she was tied for 50th at Walton Heath last year, she put in three excellent seaside showings before that at Royal Troon, where she was third in 2020, Carnoustie, where she was fifth in 2021, and then at Muirfield, where she was fourth in 2022.

A supreme tee-to-green operator, she plainly welcomes a challenge like the one that presents itself this week and she looks a good price to go well.
