Golf’s leading lights enduring a gruelling four days at last week’s US Open as winner JJ Spaun was the only player to finish under par, but things should be a little easier when they head to Connecticut for this week’s Travelers Championship.
This week’s gathering is the latest signature event on the PGA Tour, which means all the top operators will be attending, including Scottie Scheffler, who won this tournament in a playoff with Tom Kim 12 months ago and recovered from a sloppy start to finish seventh at Oakmont last week.
However, there are plenty of other players either champing at the bit after strong performances at the third Major of the year or aiming to make up for last time after Pennsylvania disappointments.

Best Bet: Russell Henley @ 33/1
This week’s test at TPC River Highlands should be a lot calmer than the one the field faced at last week’s US Open, but Russell Henley’s excellent 10th place bodes well for another strong performance in Connecticut this week.
The Georgian was six shots behind winner JJ Spaun at Oakmont but can still be proud of his effort, which was in line with some of the showings he had displayed in PGA Tour signature events this year.
Henley was a winner in March’s Arnold Palmer Invitational and other results have also been impressive with fifth spots being claimed at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am and the Memorial Tournament, while a ninth at the RBC Heritage was another creditable performance.
The top four in last year’s Travelers were also ranked in the top four for greens-in-regulation and Henley stands 13th in that metric this year so it would not take a huge improvement for him to step up.
Ian Wilkerson explains:
Finding greens in regulation can be key to success at TPC River Highlands and Russell Henley is right up there in the rankings for that category and his 10th at Oakmont was another confidence boost. If he gets his putting going, he’s a massive threat.

Alternative Bet: Patrick Cantlay @ 25/1
You have to go back to the BMW Championship in August 2022 to find the last time that Patrick Cantlay claimed a PGA Tour victory but he has performed well enough in this year’s signature events to suggest that another triumph may not be that far away.
Cantlay was fifth at the Genesis Invitational, fourth at the Truist Championship and 12th at the Memorial, while he was only a shot away from making the US Open cut last week, carding a decent 72 in the second round.
This is also a venue where he also tends to flourish. He has posted seven straight top-15 finishes with his best two performances coming in his last couple of appearances - he was fourth in 2023 and fifth last year, so another strong challenge looks likely.
Ian Wilkerson explains:
It’s been a while since Cantlay was in the winner’s circle, but his TPC River Highlands deserves respect this week and he could be about to turn the corner. He was unfortunate to miss the cut at Oakmont last week, but much better can be expected in Connecticut, where he tends to flourish.
