Fleetwood was forced to settle for second at Le Golf National after a barnstorming final round from world number one Scottie Scheffler saw the American claim Olympic gold.

In an enthralling finale, Scheffler carded a phenomenal 62 to move himself to the summit and Fleetwood was tied with him at the top of the leaderboard at -19 on his walk to the 17th hole.

But the Englishman missed the green and uncharacteristically overhit his recovery chip which resulted in a bogey. Fleetwood knew only a birdie would suffice on the last, though he was unable to guide his approach shot near the pin and putted for par.

It's yet another scene of Fleetwood falling agonisingly short of victory but the Southport star can take plenty of encouragement from his Olympics outing.

Fleetwood started the final round one off the lead as he trailed playing partners Jon Rahm and American defending champion Xander Schauffele.

Where Schauffele's challenge crumbled, Rahm soared into a commanding lead and Fleetwood initially struggled to keep pace with the Spaniard.

But Rahm's grip on the gold medal loosened on the back nine and a double bogey on the 14th proved to be his undoing, with the two-time major champion slipping out of medal contention.

Fleetwood kept his cool despite Scheffler climbing to the top of the leaderboard and a birdie on the 16th moved him level, only for the 33-year-old to bogey the 17th.

Fleetwood recorded his first top five finish at the Masters in April and though he failed to make the cut at this year's Open Championship, the 2025 staging of the event returns to Royal Portrush, which was the scene of his runner-up finish in 2019.

With seven top five finishes in major tournaments and now an Olympic silver medal, there's a sense that Fleetwood will crack the code sooner rather than later.
