The American Express: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Xander Schauffele is the latest big name to withdraw from The American Express following world No.1 Scottie Scheffler's decision to give his hand injury another week to rest.

Wyndham Clark is the only member of the world's top 10 teeing it up at the pro-am event staged at three different courses - the Stadium, PGA West and La Quinta Country Club - with a 54-hole cut.

And, if we know anything about The American Express, it's that it throws up some big-priced winners, none bigger than amateur Nick Dunlap who went in 12 months ago.

The American Express betting tips and predictions

Tom Hoge E/W 1-5 - 60/1

Trying to find a winner of The American Express based on statistics from previous runnings of the event will leave your head in a spin.

There really are not too many compelling factors that link the likes of Jon Rahm, Adam Long, Hudson Swafford or Nick Dunlap, four recent winners of the event which older golf fans will remember fondly as the Bob Hope Classic.

What is clear is that a player needs patience - six-hour rounds aren't unusual with amateurs all over the plot - as well as a hot putter because this tournament has turned into an absolute birdie-fest.

Dunlap won last year - the first amateur to land a tour title since Phil Mickelson in 1991 - shooting a staggering 29-under par and winning by one from Christian Bezuidenhout. All of the top 24 by Sunday night had shot 20-under or lower.

Justin Thomas and Sungjae Im head the betting and, of the two, the Korean would get the nod because of his greater consistency and more conviction with the flat blade.

Both men are overdue wins but, as is the case with other big names like Patrick Cantlay, Wyndham Clark and Tony Finau, this could be an opportunity to swerve them all and perhaps look down the field for some big-priced action.

First up is Tom Hoge. PGA West is a collection of second shot courses and Hoge sits 11th in SG: Approach the Green, albeit after just a couple of outings so far.

He began his year at The Sentry kicking off with a 64 and followed up with three more rounds in the 60s for an eighth-place finish.

A week on he pinged the lids at the Sony Open with another 64 - this time to lead the field - and eventually came home T45.

A runner-up in this event three years, he also finished T6 in 2020 and the world No.63's one and only PGA Tour success came in California (and at a pro-am) at Pebble Beach in 2022.

Eric Cole E/W 1-5 - 50/1

Eric Cole, born in Riverside county in nearby Palm Springs, was one of those players who reached 20-under last year.

Indeed, he was smack in contention after three rounds of 66-64-66 had him in a tie for fifth, but a last-day 72 was never going to cut it.

It was the start of a solid 2024 for Florida-based Cole who would have 10 top-15s over the season, five of them in the second half of the year.

And Cole has set out nicely in 2025, carding 64-67-67-68 to finish fifth at the Sony Open, just two shots back from winner Nick Taylor.

Cole is a second-shot golfer, so the courses at La Quinta should bring out the best in the world No.51.

Patrick Fishburn E/W 1-5 - 50/1

There are plenty of good things being said about Patrick Fishburn, who led the PGA Tour in greens hit as a rookie in what was a fruitful 2024.

Seven missed cuts in his first eight events would have tested the mettle of many a man, but the Utah ace took it all in his stride, going on to deliver 10 top-25s, including third-place finishes at the Barracuda and the Procore.

Now, feeling like he belongs, Fishburn signed for a 13-under par 267 and a tie for fifth at the Sony Open last week, where he showed off a sparkling short game.
