Wells Fargo Championship: Prediction, Tips and Odds

The PGA Tour stops off in North Carolina this week for the Wells Fargo Championship, the sixth signature event of the season, and the Racing Post’s Steve Palmer provides his best selections.

Rory McIlroy headlines the field in the absence of world number one Scottie Scheffler, who is awaiting the birth of his first child, and the injured Ludvig Aberg.

Wells Fargo Championship betting tips and predictions

Rory McIlroy to win - 15/2

McIlroy has won three of the last 11 editions of the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow and the world number two will be fancying his chances of a fourth triumph this week.

The Northern Irishman can be backed at 15/2 for more North Carolina success, with next week's US PGA Championship looming large, and he will be sensing a golden opportunity for a fabulous fortnight.

McIlroy won the US PGA at Valhalla in 2014 a week after winning the Bridgestone Invitational on the PGA Tour. He could be set for another quickfire double, with Valhalla staging the second Major of the year again next week.

Quail Hollow was the scene of McIlroy's maiden PGA Tour title in 2010, then he won the Wells Fargo by seven shots in 2015, before a third victory in 2021. Fresh from Zurich Classic glory alongside Shane Lowry last time out, more Rory success in Charlotte seems on the cards.

Max Homa to win and each-way - 20/1

Like McIlroy, Max Homa won his maiden PGA Tour title at Quail Hollow, and these two may end up starring in this week's edition.

Homa was ranked 417th in the world when he won the 2019 Wells Fargo Championship, but he tees off this week as world number 10.

At 20/1, the American seems a rock-solid each-way investment given he also showed his love for Quail Hollow in the 2022 Presidents Cup. Making his debut for Team USA, he won four points from four matches, then he finished eighth in the 2023 Wells Fargo.

Last month’s Masters was a huge boost to Homa's confidence. He had never contended for a Major title before, but got himself in the thick of things at Augusta, eventually finishing third behind Scheffler and Aberg.

Homa's self-belief is at an all-time high and there is every reason to believe he will be a serious threat in the Wells Fargo - a tournament he won for a second time at a different venue in 2022.

Adam Scott to win and each-way - 45/1

Adam Scott was driving superbly at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson last week and the Australian continues to produce rock-solid all-round golf.

The 45/1 about Scott winning the Wells Fargo Championship is worth a second glance because the former world number one is full of his trademark power and poise.

Scott has finished in the top 10 in 10 of his last 25 tournaments. His putting is consistent these days, with the long flat stick, and his record at Quail Hollow is more than respectable. He finished fifth in last year's edition.

Scott was third at Quail Hollow in 2006, showing an early liking for the venue, and he scored two points on an Internationals side which was thrashed in the 2022 Presidents Cup at Quail.

Tommy Fleetwood - Top Englishman - 1/1

The even-money about Tommy Fleetwood finishing the week as top Englishman looks a solid wager. This three-runner market also features Matt Fitzpatrick and Justin Rose.

Fleetwood tied third in the Masters, a significant boost to confidence, and this week he tees up at a course where he finished fifth last year. The ball-striking test of Quail Hollow suits the Southport man, who is typically solid from tee to green.

Fleetwood seems by far the most likely English title contender in the Wells Fargo and should arguably be odds-on to defeat Fitzpatrick and Rose.
