Adrian Otaegui could prove to be a worthy favourite for the Soudal Open as the DP World Tour makes its first European stop of 2024 at the Rinkven International in Antwerp, Belgium.

It looks to be an open field and it would be a surprise if another course winner, Guido Migliozzi, also doesn’t make a big impression.

It looks a competitive market to win the first European event of this year’s DP World Tour calendar and many will fancy their chances.

No Belgian has won any of the 17 European Tour events held in that country, but Thomas Pieters will feel he can buck that trend after some encouraging performances on the breakaway LIV Tour.

England’s Jordan Smith finished last week’s US PGA Championship with a fine 64 for a share of 39th spot, which is good form among this company, while Germany’s Yannik Paul, who often gets into the mix in these tournaments, should be spurred on by his second spot two years ago.

However, it is Spain’s Adrian Otaegui who could take all the beating at the Rinkven International, where he triumphed in the Belgian Knockout in 2018.

That was an unusual set-up with a match-play tournament deciding the winner after the opening two rounds, but the quirky format on that occasion should not have a detrimental effect on his confidence.

Otaegui was unable to make the weekend at the US PGA at Valhalla last week, but he will not face an elite field this week and should be bullish that he can post another success there.

He won the last DPWT gathering in China two weeks ago and on a course where finding the fairways is key and straight hitters tend to flourish, it seems sensible to get behind the man who is at the top of the tour’s driving-accuracy statistics.

The stars seem to have aligned this week and it would be a big surprise if, once again, the five-time tour champion did not make his presence felt.

Joost Luiten - 40/1

Dutchman Joost Luiten has had a long wait for another DP World Tour title with the last one coming at the 2018 Oman Open, but he has the skillset to be a factor this week.

Accuracy is one of the strongest elements of Luiten’s game - he is 22nd in the DPWT rankings in that regard - so while he missed the cut on his last visit to Rinkven International two years ago, he should be well equipped to cope with the demands of this tight Belgian track.

Recent results also provide encouragement as he was 11th in both the Indian Open and the Singapore Classic and also 13th in his last outing at the China Open, so good times could be just around the corner as he has built a strong foundation for a successful European campaign over the summer.

Guido Migliozzi - 40/1

Another course winner who looks to have come into form at just the right time is Guido Migliozzi.

The Italian succeeded Otaegui as Belgian Knockout champion in 2019 and found only the Spaniard to be too good at the China Open a fortnight ago.

That was Migliozzi’s best result since he claimed the 2022 French Open and the fond memories of his Rinkven victory five years ago could give him the extra push he needs to get back into the winners’ circle.
