Golf Men's Olympics: Prediction, Tips and Odds

The world's elite players have gathered at Le Golf National, which annually hosts the French Open, to compete for Olympic medals over 72 holes of action. Racing Post's Steve Palmer has picked out his best bets for the Paris showpiece.

Collin Morikawa - 10/1

Xander Schauffele won gold in the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo - and Team USA have an excellent chance of claiming the most prized medal again this time. The four Americans who have qualified are Schauffele, Scottie Scheffler, Wyndham Clark and Collin Morikawa.

Schauffele had lots of media commitments to deal with after winning the Open Championship in Scotland the week before last, then he went to Portugal to recover from his exertions. Making his Le Golf National debut, he may not have given himself enough time to get to know the layout.

Scheffler's Olympics preparation has been similarly low-key, with wife and child joining him on the trip, while Clark has been badly struggling for form. Morikawa, a 10/1 chance for Olympics glory, appears the best prepared. He attended the Olympics opening ceremony, getting to Paris early, giving himself time to learn the dimensions of Le Golf National in practice.

Morikawa, who has finished in the top 20 in his last 10 tournaments, is extremely well suited to the course. He was fourth on his Olympics debut in Tokyo, but can leave with gold this time.

Tom Kim - 22/1

Some players have arrived at the Olympics carrying questionable motivation at the end of a hectic golfing schedule, but the South Korean representatives are probably viewing this event as their most important one of the year and Tom Kim is well worth considering in the outright market.

Kim knows that a medal of any kind in the Olympics means he will become exempt from the two years of military service which is mandatory for South Korean citizens. Careers of promising young South Koreans have been destabilised by this enforced break, so the motivation for Kim is obvious.

Kim has been in superb form this year and appears well capable of getting on to the leaderboard in Paris. He carded a 64 at Le Golf National in last year's French Open on his way to a sixth place finish and could be an outside shout for gold this time around.

Sepp Straka - 45/1

Austria do not win many medals in the Olympics, but Sepp Straka provides his country with an opportunity for a rare gold this week. Straka, who has started contending in Majors in the last couple of years and was part of a winning Ryder Cup team, appears ready to play a leading role in Paris.

Straka, available at 40/1 for Olympics gold, is a dependable ball-striker who can plot safe passage on this week's dangerous track. He has been consistently impressive from tee to green from spring onwards, finishing 22nd in the Open last time out.

Alex Noren - 30/1

The top Scandinavian market is an interesting one - and former French Open champion Alex Noren could prove the value option.

Not only does Noren has a victory to his name at Le Golf National, he also played a significant role in helping Europe win the Ryder Cup at this venue in 2018.

Noren can be backed at 16/5 to finish the week as top Scandinavian. His rivals are Ludvig Aberg, Viktor Hovland, Nicolai Hojgaard, Thorbjorn Olesen and Kristoffer Ventura. Given the consistency Noren has shown this year, including in July in the Scottish Open and the Open Championship, this experienced campaigner can leave Aberg, Hovland, Hojgaard, Olesen and Ventura behind.
