The Golf Club de Chapultepec hosts the LIV Golf Mexico City get-together this week, and a host of players who forced their way to strong finishes at the Masters two weeks ago will want to kick-start their performances on the breakaway tour.
They include Patrick Reed, who is a course winner and was third at Augusta.
Patrick Reed - 12/1
Jon Rahm is set to go off as the favourite for LIV Golf Mexico City after he finished strongly at the Masters and he is guaranteed to get plenty of support from the home galleries at Club Golf de Chapultepec, where he holds the 18-hole course record with a 61.
However, his potential prominence is reflected in the prices and it could pay to support another player who performed well enough at Augusta to suggest big results are on the horizon now the breakaway circuit has kicked back into action.
While Bryson DeChambeau went out in the final Sunday group with Green Jacket winner Rory McIlroy, Patrick Reed was the highest LIV Augusta finisher, claiming third spot to add to some good recent results.
Reed struggled to 44th in Riyadh and 37th in Adelaide at the start of the year, but he got his act together with a 10th in Hong Kong and then seventh at Miami, where he was made to rue a disappointing weekend after firing an opening 67 that left him clear of the field.
But his Masters performance is a great building block and he triumphed at this venue in 2020 when it hosted a WGC event that attracted an elite field, so it would be a surprise if he did not enjoy a good week.
David Puig - 25/1
David Puig is a player who continues to grow in LIV circles and a breakthrough success on the tour may not be far away.
The Spaniard finished 2024 strongly with a third spot at the Spanish Open and fourth at the Alfred Dunhill Links on the DP World Tour, which he followed in the new year with a third at Ras al Khaimah and fourth in Bahrain on the same circuit.
He showed no signs of slowing down in the opening events of the LIV campaign as he secured top-six finishes in Riyadh, Adelaide and Singapore and recovered from an opening 77 in Miami to finish 14th, so he looks one to watch.
Tom McKibbin - 30/1
Tom McKibbin’s decision to join LIV at the start of the year raised a few eyebrows, but he has done well in building on a sixth place at the Dubai Desert Classic to ease into the three-round format.
The Northern Irishman was 15th on his debut in Riyadh, seventh in Adelaide and then sixth in Hong Kong before following his 25th in Singapore by finishing third on the DP World Tour’s Singapore Classic a week later.
His 14th in Miami was no disgrace and he has demonstrated he can compete well in this company, so expect him to have another strong week.
