Brooks Koepka's Smash could be the team to look out for in LIV Golf's Team Championship this week when the 13 quartets battle it out in Dallas.
The Fire Balls under Sergio Garcia could also make their presence felt over three days at the exclusive Maridoe Golf Club in Texas.
Smash - 15/2
The LIV Golf Team Championship is a competition that will be played over three days in a combination of match play and stroke play formats.
The three teams who finished top of the standings - defending champions Crushers, captained by Bryson DeChambeau, Legion XIII, led by individual champion Jon Rahm, and Ripper, skippered by Cameron Smith, have been handed passes to the semi-finals which will be played on Saturday.
That leaves 10 teams to battle it out for the remaining five spots on Friday, with the 16 members of the four semi-final winners set to play out the final over 18 holes of strokeplay on Sunday.
There are question marks over the market leaders so it may pay to give those at the top of the betting a swerve and look for some value further down the field.
Crushers won the competition last year when they beat RangeGoats by two shots, but this week’s test at the Maridoe may call for a less gung-ho approach from DeChambeau’s team.
Water lies in wait on most of the holes, so they may not be able to let rip and that could cause problems meaning the holders may not represent great value, while favourites Legion XIII could also fail to ignite.
While they contain Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton, who finished fourth in his debut season, there will still be plenty of pressure on fellow team members Caleb Surrett and Kieran Vincent, both of whom struggled.
Number four seeds Smash could be the team who emerges from the pack and not just because they have first choice as to which quartet they will face on Friday.
Skipper Brooks Koepka is a steady pair of hands, while they also have 2023 individual winner Talor Gooch in their number, who was 10th in the standings this time.
They would have been a lot closer to gaining a seeding had they not been disqualified in Nashville when they finished third.
They have former US Open champion Graeme McDowell, who previously revelled in the Ryder Cup, in their ranks and the Northern Irishman has played better this year and can help the team, along with Jason Kokrak.
Fire Balls - 8/1
Fire Balls will have third pick as Friday’s quarter-finals are put together and there is a strong chance that Sergio Garcia’s team could go all the way.
The former Masters champion has had a strong individual season, finishing third and winning the get-together in Andalucia and his team were third in the latest gathering in Chicago.
Garcia should be ably assisted by Mexican Abraham Ancer, who is another solid tee-to-green operator. He should get to grips with this week’s test, while David Puig and Eugenio Chacarra both have experience of playing at Maridoe as amateurs and should be able to play more than a supporting role, even if their early involvement is limited to foursomes.
It would be a surprise if they did not fight their way into the semi-finals and from there they have the ability to trouble any other outfit in the 13-team line-up.
