The race is on for the $18m first prize that comes with being crowned PGA Tour FedEx Cup champion, but the aim for the 70 competitors in this week’s FedEx St Jude Championship is to just stay in the hunt.
They each have to claim a spot in the top 50 to progress to next week’s BMW Championship, from which 30 players will qualify to fight it out for the big prize.
Two weeks on from the final Major of the season, The Open, most of the big names have taken the opportunity to recharge their batteries for the battle ahead.
World number one Scottie Scheffler carded seven straight top-five finishes before he had to recover from a poor start to take 23rd spot at Royal Liverpool and The Players Championship winner is 6/1 for glory at TPC Southwind in Memphis.
Spaniard Jon Rahm is 8/1 after he was tied for second behind Brian Harman at Hoylake and the Masters champion will have his admirers, as will reigning Tour champion Rory McIlroy, who recently tasted victory at the Scottish Open.
Last year’s FedEx St Jude winner Will Zalatoris will not defend his title as he is recovering from a back injury, but runner-up Sepp Straka is in action and the playoff loser is 45/1 to go one better this time.
Each-way terms of a quarter the odds, the first five places are available for the FedEx St Jude Championship, as well as alternative options, like a fifth the odds the first eight placed in the Each Way Extra section.
This is the second year that TPC Southwind has been used for the FedEx playoffs, but last year it entertained a field of 121 players before the system was restructured.
Now, just 70 players head to Memphis looking to make the next round, but this is still a familiar track as it hosted the St Jude Classic between 1989 and 2018 and then, for three years, was the home of the WGC FedEx St Jude Invitational.
There is plenty of water to negotiate on the 7,243-yard, par 70 and the undulating fairways make accuracy important.
The 485-yard fifth is one of the toughest par-fours on the course while the par-three 11th, with its island green, resembles the famous 17th at Sawgrass.
There is a chance of rain on the first three days, although conditions should be dry for the tournament's climax with temperatures around 30C.
Collin Morikawa has become a bit forgotten after failing to live up to his outstanding achievements of the last couple of years.
However, he looks a good outright bet at 20/1 as he is one of the finest tee-to-green players on the tour, and he recently only lost in a play-off for the Rocket Mortgage Classic to Rickie Fowler.
Tom Kim, who is 35/1, looks to have recovered from the ankle injury that prevented him from defending his Wyndham Championship last week and he heads to Memphis in excellent nick, having followed his sixth spot at the Scottish Open with second at the Open.
He was 13th at Southwind last year.
US Open champion Wyndham Clark, who is 33/1 for Southwind glory, has moved up to 11th in the world rankings and has great potential this week, having carded three rounds of 67 at the venue on his way to 28th place last year. It could just all come together again.
The 2009 US Open champion Lucas Glover is enjoying a renaissance, having finished in the top six in four of his last five tournaments, including a win at the Wyndham Championship last week.
The standard of opposition is higher this week, but his confidence levels will be sky high and he is an attractive top-10 finish bet at 11/2.
