After Niklas Norgaard’s victory at the British Masters, the DP World Tour heads to Switzerland for the European Masters, where last week’s runner-up Thriston Lawrence is expected to make a big push for glory after some impressive recent results.
Lawrence won this event two years ago, but former champions Matt Fitzpatrick and Rasmus Hojgaard will be confident that they can make bold bids too.
Thriston Lawrence to win and each-way - 18/1
English Ryder Cup hero Matt Fitzpatrick has won the European Masters twice and was third last year, but his single-figure price looks short enough following an underwhelming season on the PGA Tour.
The Sheffield swinger has posted just three top-10 finishes this year, and there looks better value to be had by backing another former champion, Thriston Lawrence at twice the price.
The South African tasted victory at the stunning Crans-sur-Sierre course two years ago, when he came out on top in a play-off against Matt Wallace, and his recent results suggest another victory may not be far away.
It is not untypical of South African players to perform well in the opening weeks of the DP World Tour when tournaments feature heavily in their homeland, but Lawrence has got a second wind recently.
He was second at the European Open in June and then really caught the eye at The Open at Royal Troon where he finished fourth.
The man from Nelspruit subsequently won a three-round tournament on his home Sunshine Tour by five shots and was then second behind Norgaard at the Belfry last week.
So he could hardly be heading to the Alps in finer fettle and has the extra motivation in the remaining months of the season to force his way into the world’s top 50 from 62nd in the rankings, as that would bring additional invitations to the biggest tournaments.
This looks like a great opportunity for him to make a big stride in that direction.
Bernd Wiesberger to win and each-way - 22/1
Rasmus Hojgaard won this tournament in 2021 and has boosted his mood with a third spot at the Belfry, but it is the man who finished runner-up to him three years ago who could make a stronger challenge.
Bernd Wiesberger came back full-time onto the DP World Tour at the start of the year after a stint playing LIV Golf, and it has been a smooth transition with the Austrian claiming 11 top-25 spots in his 15 tournaments.
He has been the fourth best tee-to-green player on the DPWT this year and that ability should help him at Crans-sur-Sierre where the emphasis is finding small greens from the tree-lined fairways.
He sat out the British Masters last week and the rest could have done him good as he prepares to make a bold bid.
Romain Langasque to win and each-way - 35/1
Romain Langasque is another player whose recent results suggest a victory may not be far away as he looks to add to his victory at the 2020 Wales Open.
The Frenchman was ninth at the BMW International Open and then demonstrated that he can perform in a strong field when third at the Scottish Open.
Unfortunately, a back injury meant he had to withdraw during the following week’s Open, but there was no sign of any ill-effects when he was second behind his countryman Frederic Lacroix at the Danish Championship last time out.
His Crans-sur-Sierre form is not great, but he was seventh in 2016 and there looks a strong chance he will be able to better that effort.
