Australian PGA Championship: Prediction, Tips and Odds

This week’s Australian PGA Championship marks the start of the new DP World Tour season, just a matter of days after the conclusion of the last campaign.

A gaggle of top-class Australians are looking to star in their homeland, including Cameron Smith, who is a three-time winner of this event. He has finished third and second in two Australasian Tour events this month, so has warmed up well for this week's Royal Queensland assignment.

Min Woo Lee is the defending champion, having enjoyed a three-shot triumph 12 months ago, and he will be eager for success after failing to add to his collection this year.

Former world number one Jason Day is making a rare start in Australia, while Herbert is also joined by compatriots Cameron Davis and Marc Leishman.

Australian PGA Championship betting tips and predictions

Lucas Herbert to win and each-way - 10/1

Victory in the New South Wales Open last Sunday has sent Lucas Herbert into the Australian PGA Championship bursting with form and confidence. The 28-year-old may emerge as the local lad who performs best at Royal Queensland.

Herbert is based in Queensland and relishing the opportunity to show off his skills in front of family and friends. Sunday's success was his first on the Australasian Tour and his mantelpiece is weighing heavy after three DP World Tour victories and a 2021 Bermuda Championship triumph on the PGA Tour.

Herbert has banked a fortune on the LIV circuit this year, playing a leading role in his Ripper side winning the LIV Team Championship at the end of September. A closing round of 67 for a three-shot win on Sunday has sent him to Brisbane in a vibrant mood.

Elvis Smylie to win and each-way - 45/1

Large crowds may gather to watch Elvis Smylie in the years to come. The brilliant Australian left-hander won his maiden Australasian Tour title a month ago and has been in superb form on his home circuit.

Smylie's form figures are 3-1-8-5-24 and the Queenslander looks well equipped to make a serious impact in the PGA. He was a quarter-finalist in the Australian Amateur at this course in 2020 and he knows the layout extremely well. Mike Clayton, the course designer, is a close friend of his.

Smylie has twice finished 12th in the PGA at Royal Queensland and looks ready to make the step up this week to seriously contend for the title.

Harrison Crowe to win and each-way - 400/1

Like Smylie, Harrison Crowe showed a liking for Royal Queensland in the 2020 Australian Amateur, and the Sydney-based 23-year-old looks like a lively outsider for the PGA.

Crowe won the 2022 Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship to underline his great potential. He also won his maiden Australasian Tour title that year in the New South Wales Open. His fantastic performances as an amateur meant he was expected to quickly make waves as a professional. That has yet to materialise, but he is young and still has time on his side.

There have been signs of life in recent weeks, including seventh place in the New South Wales Open on Sunday, so the huge odds against his name may be worth a small each-way investment.
