The season started with the Australian PGA Championship last week, which was won by rising star Elvis Smylie, who repelled the likes of Cameron Smith and Marc Leishman to make his DP World Tour breakthrough at the age of 22.
Smylie is back in action this week and can be backed at 40/1 for a quickfire follow-up triumph. Smith, who has already bemoaned the set-up of the courses in his pre-tournament media conference this week, is a 13/2 chance for a first Australian Open title on Sunday. Leishman is 10/1.
Joaquin Niemann is the defending champion - the Chilean having enjoyed a play-off victory at The Australian GC in Sydney 12 months ago. Niemann is keen to improve his world ranking by retaining his trophy and is 9/2 market leader.
Two courses are being used for the Australian Open. Three of the rounds will be at Kingston Heath, with one at Victoria. The Women's Australian Open is being staged at the same time at the same venues.
Lucas Herbert to win and each-way - 12/1
LIV Golf star Lucas Herbert faced some tough opening-round conditions in the Australian PGA last week and was left playing catch-up after a Thursday 71. It was a sluggish performance after his New South Wales Open victory the previous Sunday, but better can be expected in Melbourne this week from the 12/1 chance.
Herbert won the NSW Open by three shots, fresh from a successful LIV campaign which included a team triumph in LIV Adelaide, so the 28-year-old has been enjoying competition in his home country. He finished tenth the last time Kingston Heath and Victoria were used for the Australian Open, and can get his name on the leaderboard again.
David Micheluzzi to win and each-way - 22/1
The 22/1 about David Micheluzzi has been popular, which is hardly surprising considering how well he performed in the Australian PGA Championship last week. Fifth place in Brisbane on Sunday followed up an excellent maiden campaign on the DP World Tour.
Micheluzzi is blessed with incredible short-game skills, which stand him in great stead at Kingston Heath and Victoria, where the greens are slick and undulating. He has a strong record in this region, including second place in the 2022 Sandbelt Invitational. He tied 10th with Herbert the last time Kingston Heath and Victoria hosted the Australian Open.
Kazuma Kobori to win and each-way - 40/1
If another youngster is going to follow Elvis Smylie into the winner's enclosure, then Kazuma Kobori seems a lively candidate. The Japanese-born New Zealander has won three times on the Australasian Tour this year, building on a magnificent amateur career.
Kobori is a 23-year-old who seems to be going places fast. He won the Australian Amateur title last year and has quickly proved himself in the professional ranks, including on the DP World Tour. He was 12th in the Dunhill Links Championship last month and 15th in the Australian PGA Championship last Sunday. Kobori has quickly built an excellent record in the state of Victoria.
