Golden Globes: Date, history, contenders, awards & more

The Golden Globes Awards have become a landmark occasion in the annual entertainment awards season, honouring the top performers in film and television since 1944.

The 2024 awards will be the 81st edition and there will be two new categories added this year, for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement and Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television.

The event is often seen as a good form guide for the Academy Awards, or Oscars, which close the awards season. Still, the Golden Globes provides two contenders for Best Picture as it divides its overall best film award into two categories: Best Picture (Drama) and Best Picture (Musical or Comedy).

Golden Globes categories

The most prestigious awards for movies at the Golden Globes are the Best Picture (Drama) and Best Picture (Musical or Comedy), while there are also honours for Animated and Non-English Language movies.

The acting awards are also split into Drama and Musical/Comedy sections, with the Best Actor and Best Actress recognised in each category, along with a Supporting Actor and Actress in each genre.

Other awards include Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Original Score and Best Original Song.

There are also awards for television programmes, again split in a similar fashion into Drama and Musical/Comedy groupings and with separate acting categories in the same manner as the movie awards.

Who has won the most Golden Globes awards?

Meryl Streep holds the record for most Golden Globes wins with eight, while Jack Nicholson, Shirley MacLaine, Alan Alda and Angela Lansbury have six each, and Nicole Kidman and Kate Winslet are among the group of five-time winners.

Who are the favourites for the Golden Globes?

There is a hot favourite in the Best Picture (Drama) category this year, with Oppenheimer heading the market at 2/9, followed by Killers of the Flower Moon at 3/1.

The Best Picture (Musical/Comedy) category is much harder to predict, with Poor Things just the favourite at 10/11 ahead of Barbie at 11/10 and The Holdovers at 11/2.

Cillian Murphy is the 5/6 joint-favourite in the Best Actor (Drama) category for his performance as physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, the "father of the atomic bomb" in Oppenheimer, with Bradley Cooper given the same odds for his portrayal of composer Leonard Bernstein in Maestro.

Paul Giamatti is the favourite in the Best Actor (Musical/Comedy) category for his role in The Holdovers at 4/5, with Jeffrey Wright priced at 11/8 for his role as writer Thelonious "Monk" Ellison in American Fiction.

Native American actress Lily Gladstone is the favourite to win the Best Actress (Drama) award for her role as Molly Burkhart in Killers of the Flower Moon, with British actress Carey Mulligan a 5/2 chance for her performance in Maestro.

Emma Stone is a hot favourite to land the Best Actress (Musical/Comedy) honour for her part in Poor Things, and Christopher Nolan is 1/6 to be named Best Director for Oppenheimer.
