With the new year fast approaching, we have priced up a goalkeeper to score a Premier League goal at 10/1 in 2025.
While at first glance it may look a short price for something that never seems to happen, goalkeepers have scored in the Premier League on average once every five years, and since Peter Schmeichel scored the first in 2001, the ratio drops to one goal every four years.
Date | Player | For | Against |
20 October 2001 | Peter Schmeichel | Aston Villa | Everton |
21 February 2004 | Brad Friedel | Blackburn Rovers | Charlton Athletic |
17 March 2007 | Paul Robinson | Tottenham Hotspur | Watford |
4 January 2012 | Tim Howard | Everton | Bolton Wanderers |
2 November 2013 | Asmir Begović | Stoke City | Southampton |
16 May 2021 | Alisson Becker | Liverpool | West Bromwich Albion |
Schmeichel, who was no stranger to finding the net, scored the first Premier League goal back in 2001 from a late corner, with Brad Friedel following suit in 2004.
Paul Robinson actually scored from a free-kick inside his own half when the ball bounced and looped over Ben Foster at White Hart Lane in 2007, with Tim Howard simply launching the ball upfield, only for the wind and a freak bounce to catch Bolton goalkeeper Adam Bogdan out.
Asmit Begovic then scored a goal in similar circumstances for Stoke City against Southampton, scoring what was officially recognised at the time as the world's longest goal with a clearance from his own area just 13 seconds into the game, leaving opposite number Artur Boruc red-faced.
There was then a seven-and-a-half-year drought before Alisson popped up for Liverpool to become the only keeper to score a winning goal in the Premier League. With Liverpool desperately chasing UEFA Champions League football and drawing with West Brom, the keeper went up for a stoppage-time corner, powering a header home.
It's now been three-and-a-half years since a goalkeeper scored in the Premier League. Will we see number seven in 2025?
