We analyse the profiles and credentials of Gervonta Davis and Lamont Roach as the American pair prepare to battle it out for the WBA lightweight championship in March 2025.
If he is to be believed then 2025 is the farewell tour in the career of Gervonta Davis. The polarising character told media in December: “After next year, I’m out of it.”
On 1st March 2025, ‘Tank’ returns to the ring for the first time in nine months when he defends his WBA lightweight world title against super featherweight champion Lamont Roach.
Is this the warm-up to a super-fight against Shakur Stevenson or Devin Haney or can Roach shock the world?
Let’s look at the Tale of the Tape.

A fighter as good as Gervonta Davis can sometimes frustrate the boxing public.
The two-weight world champion is one of the more gifted athletes in the sport but after 30 fights and millions of dollars in the bank it feels as though the 30-year-old is nowhere near his ceiling.
On several occasions Davis has been matched with opponents who have been picked for him to look good against but his potential is so much more than that.
For example, Ryan Garcia is not an elite fighter but Davis made a young, fearless, quick and talented fighter look like an ordinary one during their mega-fight in April 2023 which Davis won by seventh-round knockout.
Shakur Stevenson, Devin Haney, Vasyl Lomachenko, Keyshawn Davis and Andy Cruz are five fights which Davis and his team should be seriously considering if they’re serious about the legacy of ‘Tank’.
But one fears that both fighter and management are not and the biggest interest of all lies in how much money they can make.
Hopefully, before he “retires” we will see Davis given an acid test and his abilities pushed to their limit. If he continues to take on smaller men or overmatched fighters then his career is one which may quickly be forgotten about.
Strengths | Weaknesses |
Knockout power | Reckless |
Punch combinations | Vulnerable to left hooks |
Ruthless finisher | Blows hot and cold |
Underrated defence | Slow starter |
Just before the first bell sounds for their fight on 1st March, Lamont Roach will look across at an opponent who already has an edge over him.
Both talented amateurs, the two men faced one another in 2011 where Davis got the nod on points over three rounds.
This is just another obstacle, albeit a mental one, which Roach will have to overcome when media quiz him about the defeat during fight week.
Come fight night Roach cannot afford to be caught like a rabbit in the headlights.
Against fighters who lack the quality of ‘Tank’ we have seen Roach size up his foe and wait to pick the right opportunities.
Against the WBA lightweight champion he won’t be afforded such time because Davis, a slow starter himself, can smell fear and trepidation in a boxing ring and uses it to his advantage.
Davis has Roach beaten in most departments so should the latter hope to stand a chance against the naturally bigger, stronger man, he will have to take this contest round-by-round and not get caught by Tank’s shellshocks which little by little break men down and end fights before they know it.
Strengths | Weaknesses |
Jab to the body | Slow starter |
Composure | Punch output |
Left hook | Slaps his punches |
Right hand | Gets caught between styles |
