George Kambosos Jr makes his super-lightweight debut against Australian compatriot Jake Wyllie on Saturday afternoon and our resident boxing expert Rob Tebbutt has picked out his best bet.
George Kambosos Jr faces Jake Wyllie on Saturday in Sydney, after a late-replacement from original opponent Daud Yordan saw Kambosos offer a ‘Rocky’ moment to the Australian super-lightweight champion.
Kambosos enters the bout in pretty rocky form, albeit having competed almost exclusively against world-class opposition in recent years.
His most recent bout, an eleventh-round TKO loss to Vasiliy Lomachenko last May, was the first time he has been stopped in his career and, having arguably overachieved in his career, it is uncertain how much he has left.
That being said, Wyllie is taking an enormous step up in opposition here.
Footage of the 24-year-old is hard to come by, but 15 knockouts in 16 wins indicate he can punch his weight up at 140lbs.
His best chance may be to ‘stick it on’ Kambosos early and hope that his youth and natural-size advantage will be enough to score the upset. However, it is difficult to make a case for Wyllie getting the win here.
He’s taken the fight on less than a week’s notice and, while Kambosos isn’t what I would consider an ‘elite’ fighter, his experience should be enough to see him over the line here.
In his only loss, Wyllie was dropped twice before being stopped inside three rounds by 0-2 Faavesi Isaako, so there could be some value on Kambosos scoring his first stoppage since a 2019 TKO of Richard Pena.
However, I think a price of 4/9 is a little short, so I’ll be looking at Kambosos to get the job done in the second half of the fight at a reasonable-looking 21/10.
