Viva for victory

There are no end of possibilities in a highly competitive Gordon Richards Novices' Limited Handicap Chase (1.25).

Classy handicappers Mister Whitaker and Two For Gold have taken this contest in recent years and with 12 of this year's 13 runners having been successful during the last campaign this is likely to be strong form again.

Ubetya and Frimeur De Lancray have chasing experience and the former in particular may try to test those having their first starts over the bigger obstacles after a freegoing victory on his latest start.

That was his sixth chase start though and he looks a bit exposed for this contest, where some powerful stables are represented.

Jonjo O'Neill took it last year and his unbeaten Iron Bridge is sure to be popular, which will hopefully lead to some juice in the price of my selection, Dan Skelton's Viva Lavilla.

A soft ground point winner, he should cope with conditions and can improve for his season over hurdles.

His wind-op is particularly interesting as he didn't seem to be seeing his races out last season, yet still showed enough ability in decent novice hurdles to look well handicapped.

He won first time up last year and can take this on the way to better things.

Bank on Millers

The Colin Parker Memorial Chase (2.30) has had some very classy winners recently with Many Clouds, Waiting Patiently and Imperial Aura all taking this on their way to bigger prizes.

Although not a vintage renewal, these runners certainly have aspirations this season.

Corach Rambler's main aim is what was the Ladbroke Trophy at Newbury next month and ideally he wants further than this, while Bear Ghylls was a very good novice two seasons ago.

Alex Hales' 8yo Millers Bank seeks quick compensation here after unseating at the first when sent off at 9/2 for the Old Roan Chase at Aintree last Sunday.

Unlike plenty of his rivals he should therefore be match fit, and if able to get into a nice jumping rhythm he will be tough to beat on the form of his Grade 1 win in April.

Bumper fun

The card ends with a national hunt flat race (4.13), and while these are no bet races for many, I think they often represent decent opportunities with horses previously placed being overbet against newcomers with potential.

The previously placed horses from the Fergal O'Brien and Nigel Twiston-Davies yards hopefully take a chunk out of the market here as there are two unraced sorts who look worth a dabble at the right price.

Both the dam, dam's sister and granddam of Lunar Glow won bumpers on their racecourse debut, so as a 4yo filly getting all the allowances, she has to be of interest for a stable that have already had a Sean Quinlan-ridden bumper winner this autumn.

The other of interest is Mr Bramley, who is a half-brother to two bumper winners (another sibling went close), one trained like him by by Jedd O'Keeffe.

The stable has plenty of winners in this sphere and Jack Garritty is three from eight for the stable in such races.
