Our resident boxing insider Rob Tebbutt provides his best bets for Saturday night's intriguing all-British lightweight showdown between Gary Cully and Maxi Hughes.
Gary Cully and Maxi Hughes meet in Monte Carlo this weekend, in a classic cross-roads fight in the lightweight division.
Ireland’s Cully looked much improved last time out in out-pointing wily Belgian Francesco Patera over ten rounds, and seems to have put his shock KO loss to Jose Felix Jr. back in May 2023 behind him.
Former IBO champion Hughes - the ever so slight favourite - is in need of a ‘big’ win after back-to-back losses to top contenders George Kambosos and William Zepeda and, while scoring a routine win at a lower level back in August, enters Saturday’s bout with a point to prove.
I do feel the timing of this fight perhaps favours Cully, however, Team Hughes will be confident of pulling off the win given their experience of Hughes’ stable-mate Reece Mould who boxed Cully last year.
This is a bout that could go either way, but I will edge towards the size, length and youth of Cully to eke out a close - potentially controversial - decision on the scorecards.
