Gabriel signs new long-term contract at Arsenal

Arsenal defender Gabriel has signed a new contract at the Emirates, keeping him in North London until 2029.

The Brazilian was signed in September 2020 and immediately ingratiated himself amongst the Arsenal faithful with a series of strong displays at the back.

A decline in form from the Brazilian coincided with the Gunners sliding down the league table as Gabriel continued to adjust to a new country and a new competition, though Mikel Arteta's side conceded the third-fewest goals in the 2020/21 season.

At the start of Gabriel's third season at the Emirates he was joined with William Saliba as the duo struck up one of the most formidable defensive duos in the Premier League, playing a significant role in Arsenal's title challenges in 2022/23 and 2023/24.

Gabriel has now made 210 appearances for the Gunners in all competitions and has proven himself a threat at set pieces, scoring 20 goals, doing so for the first time on his debut against Fulham.

After signing his new contract, Gabriel said: "I arrived here as a young player and after almost five years I'm so happy and I've learned a lot. I'm so proud of myself, it's an amazing journey, and I'm so happy to continue it. I hope I win some trophies with this club, because I love this club and my family loves the club, too.

"Arsenal is an amazing club and I'm so proud to sign a new contract. I love this club, I love the supporters, my teammates, I love this stadium. I'm so proud and thank you for all the support. We continue together for the future."

Making his name with Lille in France, Gabriel attracted plenty of interest from some of Europe's biggest clubs, but opted for Arsenal, who signed the centre-back in a deal worth around £27m.
