Boxing: Fury and Paul ready to settle feud

The talking will end when YouTuber Jake Paul and reality TV star Tommy Fury get into the ring to settle their differences.

Of course, Fury is a professional fighter, as well as a Love Island contestant, and that would lead you to believe that this fight will be easy pickings for the Manchester Man. However, it may not be as quiet as simple as that suggests, and as ever with Paul, it could pay to expect the unexpected.

Where, when and what channel?

Paul announced on social media that his tussle with Fury is set to take place on December 18. The Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida will host the event and the fight will be shown on BT Sport Box Office in the UK.

Fury is 4/7 to win the fight, with Paul a 5/4 shot and the draw is also worth consideration at 12/1.

From the box to the ring

Paul was a YouTube performer before switching to the boxing ring. It's fair to say that the transition has gone well for the Problem Child and the Ohio man is unbeaten in four bouts.

The American made a successful debut when beating fellow YouTuber Ali Eson Gib in January 2020 and the Problem Child then went on to score a knockout victory over former basketballer Nate Robinson.

MMA fighter Ben Askren was dispatched within one round and fellow mixed martial artist Tyrone Woodley was also beaten by Paul.

That latest win over Woodley is the strongest win on the Problem Child's card, and while we aren't talking elite-level boxing, Paul has shown that he has picked up enough skill to warrant interest here.

Jake should be able to pull his weight

Weight could play a big part in this fight. The bout has been scheduled at a 192lbs catchweight and that may favour the Problem Child. Paul has been smart in picking his opponents and he has enjoyed considerable size advantages in his four fights to date.

The Ohio man won't have the height superiority that he relished in his four previous contests, but he will still have a fair size edge. Paul weighed in at 191lbs when taking on Askren, while TNT tipped the scales at just 179lbs in his last fight against Anthony Taylor.

It's likely that Fury will bulk-up to bridge the gap, but that’s not natural size and muscle mass can often limit the speed and movement of a boxer.

Is there any substance to Fury's boxing form?

This fight is being billed as YouTuber against professional boxer and you’d be forgiven for thinking the 4-7 about Fury is a generous offer. However, there are a few things worth considering before supporting TNT.

The Manchester man is unbeaten in seven professional contests, but they have been extremely low-level bouts. Fury's debut opponent Jevgenijs Andrejevs had lost 102 fights when facing TNT, Callum Ide hadn't won any of his 30 professional bouts and Genadij Krajevskij and Scott Williams were also winless prior to stepping in the ring with the Brit.

The fact that Paul represents the toughest test of Fury's boxing career tells you all you need to know about that standard of the his previous opponents. The Manchester man would have probably faced tougher tests laying round the pool on Love Island.

For all that this is a sideline for Paul, boxing has been far from the priority for Fury either. TNT has managed just six fights since his ring debut in 2018 and he has taken plenty of breaks from the sport to appear on television.

Fury v Paul fight predictions

It's probably right that Fury is the favourite for this fight, but perhaps it's not as clear cut as the odds suggest. It seems likely that Paul will look to use his size and weight to nullify the hand speed of TNT and keep the bout at close quarters.

For all that Paul hasn't been boxing for a long period of time, he has been given excellent training and he certainly seems dedicated to the cause. The Problem Child has shown he has the conditioning for a tough eight-round fight, when going the distance with Woodley last time out, and that's something that Fury still has to prove. Yes, the Manchester man is muscle bound, but six of Fury's seven bouts have been four-round affairs and his sole six-rounder ended in the first.

It will be interesting to see how Fury's conditioning holds up in this fight and there's potential for Paul to come on strong in the later rounds.

The Problem Child may just have a little more to offer than the prices suggest, and he could find he has more joy against Fury as the bout progresses.

It's also likely to be fairly tricky for Fury to get a decision victory away from home, unless he completely dominates the American, and that perhaps isn't as likely as a closely-fought contest. Paul may not have the power to stop TNT, but he may have enough ability to gain a decision victory.
