The Bees (19/20) haven’t lost in the top-flight since a 4-0 thrashing at Aston Villa back in October, and whilst they have also only been beaten once on home soil this term, the Cottagers (11/4) should provide Thomas Frank’s men one of their sternest challenges to date.
Marco Silva’s side only returned back to the top-flight last spring, but have made a mockery of their short pre-season relegation odds – sitting in seventh position in the league table, some 19 points clear of the drop zone.
Even the most optimistic Cottager couldn’t have foreseen a European charge in the club’s first campaign back in the big time, but victory at the Community Stadium will see them leapfrog Newcastle United and move level on points with top four chasing Liverpool – and likely shorten their current 16/1 ‘Top Six finish’ odds in the process.
Brentford meanwhile have every reason to dream of continental qualification themselves, especially with their side heading into this clash on the back of an outstanding 11-game unbeaten run; one that has included eye-catching successes over title chasing Manchester City and Liverpool.
Aston Villa were the last side to claim maximum spoils against them in October, and you have to go all the way back to September for the last, and only, time the Bees have been beaten on home soil in the Premier League this season (against Arsenal).
Just four points separate the two sides in the table, and whilst many would argue the smart money would be on the appealing 13/5 draw in the capital, Fulham’s 3-2 success in the return fixture earlier in the campaign could serve to inspire them to another crucial victory.
Serbian goalscoring machine Aleksandar Mitrovic, 2/1 to score anytime, was the hero at the Cottage as his last gasp effort edged a five-goal thriller in the home side’s favour, and whilst he has now gone seven without scoring, he will be champing at the bit to hit the goal-trail in front of the live TV cameras.
The 28-year-old has bagged 16 goals in 26 appearances for club and country since August, one more than Brentford’s hitman Ivan Toney has managed during an equally as impressive run of form throughout the 2022/23 campaign.
The pair were both on target the last time the two sides met in August in a fixture that had five goals, five yellow cards (2+ for each team) and, of course, that dramatic last minute Mitrovic sprinkling of magic – and we are now 14/1 on a repeat of that on Monday evening.
