Aussie Rules: Freo are flag contenders says Longmuir

Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir says his players need to believe they are genuine flag contenders following Sunday’s 14-point win over the Brisbane Lions at Optus Stadium.

The Dockers are priced at 15/2 to win the grand final and are starting to show they could have what it takes after beating the top two teams on the ladder in back-to-back weekends.

Genuine title contender

Fremantle have a 9-3 win-loss record for the season which has taken them to third on the ladder, level on points with second-placed Brisbane. Reigning premiers Melbourne are four points clear at the top.

But the fact that Freo have beaten them both over the last two weekends shows they are a genuine contender. And Longmuir wants the players to believe that.

"They should start believing. They should start understanding that we’ve made some really strong progressions with our footy," Longmuir said after the win.

"Our footy stacks up. They’ve got some good evidence of that, but to be able to beat the two top teams, they should really believe that our footy is good enough.

"The fact they’re getting to work every day and putting in the reps at training and in the meeting rooms, they should believe in the process."

Fyfe return boost

Just to make things even better for the Dockers, skipper Nat Fyfe is set to return to action following a long lay-off when they face Hawthorn on Saturday.

Fyfe has recovered from shoulder and back issues and proved his fitness when playing for Peel in the WAFL on Saturday.
