Wycombe Wanderers v Exeter City: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Wycombe's 19-match unbeaten run in League One came to an end at Charlton on Sunday, a 2-1 defeat which also saw them drop out of the top two.

They will be determined to ring in the New Year with a precious home victory against an Exeter side who are full of confidence after coming from three goals down to draw 4-4 against Crawley at the weekend.

Wycombe Wanderers & Over 2.5 Goals - 6/4

For the first time since August, Matt Bloomfield's Wycombe have tasted League One defeat and such is the quality at the top of the table that it was a costly setback.

A 19-game unbeaten run in the league since the end of September would suggest the Chairboys had streaked clear of the pack. Yet Sunday's 2-1 loss at Charlton, despite being a novel setback for the Bucks' club, actually saw them drop out of the automatic promotion places.

That's the measure of the calibre of the sides around them, with Birmingham and Wrexham going into 2025 in the top two spots, and Wycombe won't want to lose any more ground this week.

They would certainly have had few complaints about their defeat at The Valley, where the Addicks were excellent.

A glass-half-empty appraisal will point to the fact that Wycombe have won only two of their last seven in all competitions.

But the division's top scorers - they have scored eight more goals than any other team and 21 goals more than Exeter - remain an almost uniquely difficult team to play against and will carve out chances.

Exeter look vulnerable, especially defensively where they are trying to find a solution without skipper Pierce Sweeney, who will be out for a few weeks.

Gary Caldwell is a principled 3-5-2 man, but the Exeter boss was ripping up that formula at half-time on Sunday when his side trailed 4-1 at home to Crawley after a diabolical first 45 minutes.

In came the 4-4-2, up went the hunting call and the Grecians were a different side, carving out chance after chance and eventually snatching a 4-4 draw, and they probably should have won the game.

They have now scored nine goals in three games following a 2-1 win at Burton and a 3-1 victory over Bristol Rovers, but these are three bottom-five opponents who aren't at Wycombe's level.

Caldwell clearly has a tactical decision to make after the Crawley match, and worryingly, they haven't kept a clean sheet in eight, with at least two goals shipped in six of those.

They did draw 2-2 with Wycombe at St James' Park a month ago but only two sides average fewer shots on their travels than Exeter, whose exertions against Crawley could prove their undoing.

Fred Onyedinma Anytime Scorer - 5/2

Juggling workloads at this hectic time of year is a critical role for any boss and Wycvombe have enough options in attack that whichever frontmen Bloomfield deploys should go relatively fresh.

Fred Onyedinma, for example, starred for 76 minutes in Wycombe's 3-0 Boxing Day romp at Stevenage before coming off and then came off the bench at The Valley where he pepped the visitors up for the last 40 minutes in the loss at Charlton.

The ex-Millwall and Luton man has never been a prolific scorer - to the frustration of a succession of managers who sense he should have scored more in his career - but he has bagged six this season, which means he needs only three more for his most prolific campaign.

Take him to grab his seventh against an Exeter defence, which was accident-prone against Crawley in the absence of first-choice defenders Sweeney and Johnly Yfeko, who remain out.

Under 10.5 Corners - 5/6

On Exeter's last road trip - the 2-1 win at Burton before Christmas - they failed to win a single corner.

In their last seven League One games they have won 22 corners at an average of 3.3 per game.

None of those seven matches has produced any more than nine corners, including last month's 2-2 draw with Wycombe in Devon which yielded a total of seven.

None of Wycombe's last four matches have produced more than 10 corners so the stats point to this contest producing under 10.5.
