Aston Villa have won their last four competitive matches and will head to League One Wycombe Wanderers in a confident mood for their EFL Cup third round tie.
Wycombe have recovered from a slow start to the season to climb to ninth in the third tier, while they have reached the EFL Cup third round for the third time in the last seven seasons and were 1-0 winners away to Championship side Swansea City in the previous round.
However, they face a tough challenge against Villa, who have visited them twice in the competition and registered two convincing victories.
Villa won 5-0 at Adams Park in September 2003 and 8-3 in September 2005 despite trailing 3-1 at half–time.
Aston Villa and over 3.5 goals - 7/4
Villa have got some big matches on the horizon, but they are keen to progress on all fronts and can get the better of Wycombe in a high-scoring match at Adams Park.
Unai Emery has been in the Villa dugout for less than two years but he has made a massive impact.
Last season Emery took the Midlands side to fourth place in the Premier League and a UEFA Conference League semi-final, but the 52-year-old wants his team to get even better and there are signs that his demands could be met.
Villa rose to third in the Premier League after Saturday’s 3-1 victory at home to Wolves and started their UEFA Champions League challenge with a superb 3-0 win away to Young Boys.
Emery’s outfit have four more games to squeeze in before the October international break, including home fixtures against Bayern Munich and Manchester United.
It would be fair to say that the EFL Cup is at the lower end of the club’s priorities, but Emery treats every game with respect and is sure to send out a strong side.
Wycombe need to be ready for a stern test and they approach it full of confidence after five wins and a draw from their last six fixtures.
The Chairboys are up to ninth in League One - one point outside of the top six - and their only two league defeats have been away to leaders Wrexham (3-2) and at home to second-placed Birmingham (3-2).
Matt Bloomfield’s side have scored in each of their four home matches this season and will fancy their chances of exposing a below strength Villa backline.
However, Wycombe have conceded three goals on three occasions this term and their suspect defence could be ripped apart by top-flight opposition.
Jhon Duran to score any time - 6/4
Jhon Duran has been the most effective substitute in the Premier League this season - scoring four times in five cameo appearances - and he can demonstrate his quality from the start against Wycombe in Buckinghamshire.
Duran has had to show a lot of patience due to his role as a back-up to Villa’s first choice centre-forward Ollie Watkins.
However, the Colombian will get extra exposure against Wycombe and should soon make his presence felt.
The 20-year-old powerhouse should excel against League One opposition and looks a tasty 6/4 shot to get on the scoresheet.
Josh Scowen to be booked - 9/4
Wycombe will do their utmost to disrupt the flow of Villa attacks, but their midfielders could be in for a tough night’s work and one or two of them may overstep the mark in the physical exchanges.
Josh Scowen has been the Chairboys’ midfield enforcer this season - collecting four cautions in six league games - and he looks an overpriced 9/4 shot to receive another card.
