Wrexham suffered EFL Trophy disappointment as they lost on penalties to Peterborough United on Wednesday and they look vulnerable once again as they host a Bolton Wanderers team on the up under new head coach Steven Schumacher.
Three wins from their last three league games has seen Wanderers put themselves firmly back in the play-off picture after an inconsistent season, particularly under former boss Ian Evatt.
They could now take advantage of the Red Dragons’ recent struggles at home to further increase their chances of a top-six finish.
Bolton draw no bet - 5/4
Wrexham beat Bolton in the quarter-finals of the EFL Trophy recently but that was an extremely even game in which Wanderers won the shot count 10-7 despite falling to a 1-0 defeat.
Phil Parkinson’s men have also suffered two losses on home soil since that result, falling to a 2-1 defeat to Leyton Orient in the league before they let a two-goal lead slip late on against Peterborough in the EFL Trophy semi-final, eventually losing on penalties.
The Red Dragons have now won just one of their last five home games in all competitions and are set to be without Andy Cannon, who scored the winner in the cup meeting between these two, due to injury.
Bolton, on the other hand, have been in rock-solid form recently, with their 2-1 win over Leyton Orient last weekend providing a big boost to their play-off hopes.
Things had gotten stale under Evatt and it is not a surprise that new manager Schumacher has been able to shake up a squad that was coasting towards missing out on the top six.
Only the top two have scored more goals than Bolton’s 52 this season and they have spread the goals around well, with 12 players netting at least two in the league.
The Trotters have won five of their last six league games and look a tempting price to produce an away shock here.
Luke Bolton, Callum Burton and Will Boyle all join Cannon as confirmed Wrexham absentees and Elliot Lee may not be risked from the start as he recovers from a recent car accident.
Take the stalemate out of the equation and side with Bolton in the draw no bet market.
John McAtee to score at any time - 7/2
Bolton have done a good job of sharing the goals around this season but their biggest threat has been striker John McAtee, who seems to have finally nailed down a starting position under Schumacher.
The former Barnsley forward has nine goals in 19 starts this term, but he has been particularly deadly recently, benefiting from his new manager putting faith in him to lead the line.
McAtee has three goals in his last two matches and looks a big price to get on the scoresheet once again on this trip to Wales.
Over 2.5 goals - 9/10
Bolton are the top scorers outside of the top two in League One this season but their defence has also been extremely porous.
The Trotters’ 49 conceded in 32 games is the worst tally in the top half of the table and they could be set for a high-scoring affair against this Wrexham side.
Six of the Red Dragons’ last eight games have gone over 2.5 goals and a repeat of that looks likely between two sides happy to play on the front foot.
