Wolves v Newcastle United: Prediction, Tips and Odds

There have been contrasting fortunes for Wolves and Newcastle United so far this season, with the pair now seeking a positive return to action following the international break.

The home side have just one point from their opening three matches, but it has been a tough start with games against the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea.

Newcastle are currently in the top six after picking up two wins and a draw, although both victories came at St James’ Park.

Draw – 5/2

Wolves collected their first point of the campaign prior to the recent break, thanks to a 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.

That draw came off the back of an EFL Cup victory over Burnley, so confidence in the camp will be growing after a tough early-season fixture schedule.

Despite being unbeaten, Newcastle have not been convincing and have drawn in their two away games this term.

A 1-1 league draw at Bournemouth at the end of last month was followed by a 1-1 EFL Cup scoreline at Forest, with the Magpies eventually coming through that tie on penalties.

Historically, this has been a fixture where the spoils have been shared on regular occasions, with seven draws in the last 12 Premier League meetings. That includes a 2-2 scoreline in this fixture last season, when Wolves twice came from behind to claim a point.

Four of the last five Premier League meetings between the two sides at Molineux have finished in draws and you have to go back to February 2017 – when they were both in the Championship - for the last time Newcastle won at Wolves.

Matheus Cunha anytime scorer – 15/8

Gary O’Neil’s men go into Sunday’s clash having scored five goals in their last three games in all competitions.

Only four teams scored fewer goals than Wolves last season and with more exits than arrivals in the summer, several pundits have raised concerns over the team’s prospects.

They posed problems though for Arsenal on the opening weekend and although they conceded six against Chelsea, they have looked dangerous going forward.

Their main threat remains Matheus Cunha, with the Brazilian finding the net against Enzo Maresca’s Blues last month.

Cunha, who bagged 12 league goals last season, has scored in Wolves’ last two Premier League home games.

Having missed out on a call-up to the Brazil squad, the 25-year-old will be fresh and keen to make a big impact on Sunday afternoon.

Dan Burn to be booked - 4/1

Both of these teams have picked up eight yellow cards in their opening three games, while Newcastle have also received a red to add to their disciplinary tally.

One of those players that has received multiple cautions is defender Dan Burn, who has been handed two yellow cards to date.

The big centre-half has had a tough start to the season, scoring an own goal in the 2-1 home win over Tottenham.

Burn was booked in this fixture last season and the 32-year-old is likely to face a physical test against Wanderers’ Norwegian signing, Jorgen Strand Larsen.
