Wolves v Coventry: Predictions, Tips and Odds

Wolves were FA Cup semi-finalists as recently as 2019, but they face a tough quarter-final tie against Championship play-off hopefuls Coventry at lunchtime on Saturday.

The Sky Blues are one of two EFL clubs to have reached this stage and they can expect a big step up in class after winning 5-0 at home to Maidstone in the fifth round.

Wolves v Coventry betting tips and predictions

Coventry to qualify – 9/4

Coventry have not advanced beyond the FA Cup quarter-finals since lifting the trophy in 1987, but they have an excellent chance of registering a shock victory over injury-hit Wolves at Molineux.

The Sky Blues lost out to Luton in last season’s Championship playoff final and are chasing a return to Wembley on two fronts.

Mark Robins' side are eighth in the second tier, only one point outside the top six and they have made the most of some favourable FA Cup draws.

They have reached the final eight without having to face any Premier League teams and their chances of making further progress are enhanced by substantial injuries in the Wolves camp.

Wolves climbed to ninth in the top-flight after last Saturday’s 2-1 success at home to Fulham, but the result came at a considerable cost with midfielder Jean-Ricner Bellegarde and attacker Pedro Neto suffering respective knee and hamstring injuries.

Neither are expected to feature against Coventry and Wolves are further stretched by the absences of Matheus Cunha and Hwang Hee-Chan, who are recovering from hamstring issues.

It leaves Wolves with the prospect of going into arguably their biggest match of the season without any of their first choice front three and presents a wonderful opportunity for Coventry to make further progress.

City started the Championship season slowly and were perched just five points above the relegation zone in mid-November after winning only three of 16 league games.

However, they have come on strong over the last four months, taking 41 points from 21 matches, and approach the Wolves game high on confidence after back-to-back league wins at home to Rotherham (5-0) and away to Watford (2-1).

The Sky Blues’ main aim is to restore the Premier League status lost in 2001, but they are keen to continue their FA Cup adventure and look overpriced 9/4 shots to reach the final four.

Haji Wright to score any time - 10/3

Coventry have had to be patient with their high-profile summer signing Haji Wright, but they are starting to see the best of the 25-year-old American, who looks a tempting 10/3 shot to find the net against Wolves.

Wright was snapped up in August 2023 from Antalyaspor for a reported £7.7million fee as part of Coventry’s plan to lessen the blow of losing Viktor Gyokeres to Sporting Lisbon.

He arrived with high expectations having scored 15 goals in last season’s Turkish top-flight, but took a while to settle into his new surroundings.

Wright was frequently deployed as a substitute in the early months of the campaign and netted just twice in his first 14 Championship appearances.

However, he has been much more effective in recent times and took his league tally to 13 with a double in last Saturday’s 2-1 victory at Watford.

Wright has been demonstrating the physical and technical attributes which should enable him to play at a higher level and he can catch the eye of a wider audience by scoring at Molineux.

Mario Lemina to be carded - 13/5

Wolves’ lack of attacking options means there will be a heavy responsibility on their midfielders to get a grip on the game.

With Coventry’s forwards capable of carrying the greater threat, it is imperative that Wolves try to get control of the game and turn the contest into a low-scoring affair.

There are sure to be some tasty tackles in the centre of the park and home midfielder Mario Lemina is likely to be in the thick of the action.

The feisty 30-year-old has received nine yellow cards in the Premier League this season and looks a decent bet for a caution at 13/5.
