Nottingham Forest ran riot against West Ham last Saturday, dominating from start to finish at the City Ground to add to many Hammers’ fans growing fears that the appointment of Julen Lopetegui may have been the wrong one.
The Spaniard is struggling to please his new fans and there are rumblings that this clash with Everton may be a must-win for the Hammers boss.
However, achieving that goal may be tricky for Lopetegui. Everton boss Sean Dyche will be looking for a reaction from his own side following their disappointing 1-0 defeat to Southampton last Saturday and he seems more likely to get his wish at the London Stadium.
Everton or draw double chance - 4/6
Some will point to Edson Alvarez’s first-half red card as an explanation for West Ham’s dreadful performance at the City Ground last weekend but the brutal truth is they were poor before the Mexican’s dismissal and they have been pretty underwhelming all season.
A 2-1 win over Manchester United in their last match helped paper over some cracks but the Hammers were again dreadful for large portions of that game and only earned three points thanks to a controversial penalty in added time.
Three of West Ham’s five home league matches this term have ended in defeat, while they have won just four of their 15 Premier League games at the London Stadium in 2024, with that record unlikely to improve this Saturday.
Everton need a reaction of their own following a 1-0 defeat to Southampton last time, but they had more shots, shots on target and corners than the Saints in that loss and a repeat of that performance could see them add to West Ham’s misery.
Dyche’s men had gone five matches without a loss prior to that shock defeat and a decent record of three wins and two draws from five visits to the London Stadium should help them build motivation ahead of their trip to the capital.
West Ham fans are not the most patient and plenty have already turned on Lopetegui. The excitement surrounding his appointment has already fizzled out and he must come up with answers soon.
Following last week’s dismal showing, there is every chance the atmosphere will be fairly toxic in east London and that may seep onto the pitch, potentially leading to another game without a win for the Spaniard and his team.
Iliman-Cheikh Ndiaye anytime goalscorer - 15/4
Aaron Wan-Bissaka has been a rare bright spot in a difficult start to the season for the Hammers, but he has impressed in a way that many didn’t expect and has left a bit to be desired when considering his supposed strengths.
The right-back is known for being an excellent one-on-one defender while struggling when venturing forwards.
However, this term, it has been his dribbling ability which has caught the eye most, with his lapses of defensive concentration costing West Ham at the other end.
Chelsea, Brentford, Tottenham and Nottingham Forest have all created goals from attacks down the Hammers’ right-hand side in their past six league games. That is no coincidence, and Wan-Bissaka’s tendency to roam forward can often leave his side exposed.
That weakness could be exploited by Dyche, who will look to get Iliman Ndiaye in behind Wan-Bissaka at every possible opportunity on Saturday.
The Senegalese forward has taken two shots in each of Everton’s last three away matches, hitting the target with four of those efforts and scoring against Leicester and Ipswich.
Ndiaye is beginning to find his feet at the Toffees and looks a big price to find the net in east London.
Guido Rodriguez to be booked - 11/4
With Alvarez suspended, even more defensive responsibility than usual will be placed on his midfield partner Guido Rodriguez to protect the Hammers’ backline on Saturday.
However, the Argentine has struggled to get to grips with the pace of the Premier League since joining West Ham for a free in the summer, regularly getting skipped past by opposing midfielders and finding himself in trouble.
Rodriguez has committed a foul in 10 of his 11 appearances this term and was booked early on against Nottingham Forest last Saturday, a yellow card which marked his third of the campaign, and he may find his name in the referee’s book once again this weekend.
