West Ham v Tottenham: Prediction, Tips and Odds

After falling to a 4-3 defeat to Newcastle at the weekend, West Ham may suffer another loss in a high-scoring game when they host London rivals Tottenham on Tuesday in the Premier League.

The Hammers' defensive frailties were exposed in their weekend defeat at Newcastle, where they lost 4-3, having led 3-1 until the 77th minute.

The Hammers have conceded 54 goals this season, the most of any club outside the Premier League's bottom six, and they host a Tottenham side who scored yet another crucial late goal in Saturday's 2-1 home win over Luton.

Tottenham to win & both teams to score – 21/10

Tottenham's last away trip ended in a shock 3-0 defeat at Fulham, but that was the only one of their 29 Premier League matches under Ange Postecoglou in which they failed to score.

They left it late to see off relegation-threatened Luton at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday as Son Heung-min scored in the 86th minute to seal a 2-1 victory.

Spurs had gone behind in the third minute against the Hatters before coming back to claim their sixth 2-1 win of the league campaign.

Both teams have scored in 11 of their 17 victories this term and that looks a good bet at the London Stadium given West Ham's attacking talent and defensive deficiencies.

Tottenham have won only six of their 14 away matches in 2023/24, but they have also had 2-2 draws at Arsenal, Manchester United, Brentford and Everton, while December's pulsating contest at Manchester City ended 3-3.

Under Postecoglou, they rarely take a backward step, whether at home or away, and West Ham's late capitulation at St James' Park should encourage them.

David Moyes's men are again missing the suspended Edson Alvarez, a hugely significant figure in midfield since his summer move from Ajax.

Alvarez's absence means there is less protection for a struggling West Ham defence who have conceded 21 goals in their last eight league matches.

That run includes February's 6-0 home defeat to Arsenal, although the Hammers should be confident of getting on the scoresheet against Spurs, having notched 13 times in their last six league games.

2nd half to be half with most goals – 10/11

Late goals have been a feature of Postecoglou's first season at Tottenham, and his side have failed to score a first-half goal in any of their last six matches.

Remarkably, Spurs have found the net 12 times in the second half of those games, so backing more goals to be scored after the break at the London Stadium looks like a solid bet.

Tottenham's 3-1 win over Crystal Palace and 4-0 victory at Aston Villa last month were both goalless at half-time, and they came from 1-0 down at the break to beat Brighton and Luton 2-1.

The visitors have scored 64 per cent of their league goals in the second half and they will fancy their chances of more late success against West Ham, who conceded in the 77th, 83rd and 90th minutes at Newcastle.

Tomas Soucek to be booked – 10/3

With the feisty Alvarez suspended, West Ham midfielder Tomas Soucek will shoulder plenty of defensive responsibility and he is a juicy price to be shown a card on Tuesday night.

Tottenham's attacking unit is at full strength, with Son, James Maddison, Brennan Johnson, Timo Werner, Richarlison and Dejan Kulusevski all available, so the Hammers may have to work hard to disrupt their visitors' rhythm.

Soucek has a respectable disciplinary record for a defensive midfielder this season, receiving six yellow cards in 27 league starts, but three of those bookings have come in his last four appearances.

The Czech international was cautioned against Everton, Burnley and Newcastle, while two of his fellow midfielders, Alvarez and James Ward-Prowse, were shown cards in December's 2-1 away win over Spurs.
