West Brom flew out of the blocks in the Championship’s opening round of fixtures with a 3-1 triumph away to QPR and they can make a bigger statement by defeating Leeds at The Hawthorns.
The Baggies are keen to bounce back from last season’s play-off disappointment and similar sentiments apply to Leeds, who were beaten 1-0 by Southampton in the Wembley final.
Leeds are expected to push for automatic promotion but they suffered an immediate setback last Saturday, drawing 3-3 at home to Portsmouth.
West Brom to win - 9/4
West Brom won 15 of 23 Championship home matches last season and they look overpriced 9/4 shots to defeat Leeds at The Hawthorns.
The Baggies have been fairly quiet in the transfer market but lifted the mood among their supporters with last weekend’s come-from-behind 3-1 victory at QPR.
Inconsistent away results were a factor in preventing the Baggies from pushing higher up the table last season.
But they collected 49 points at The Hawthorns with only the top three clubs finishing with a superior home record.
Albion made wholesale changes for their midweek EFL Cup tie at League Two Fleetwood and were beaten 2-1.
That result indicated a lack of squad depth, but the Baggies have a competitive first eleven and are looking more of a threat up front after Josh Maja’s hat-trick at Loftus Road.
A few new signings may need to arrive for Albion to sustain a promotion challenge, but they have a largely healthy squad at this stage and are taking on Leeds at a good time.
Leeds were gutted to miss out on promotion last season after accumulating 90 points and finishing third.
They failed to perform in their 1-0 loss to Southampton in the play-off final and paid a price because a few of their key players have decided to move on.
Archie Gray, Glen Kamara and Crysencio Summerville departed by the start of the season and assist ace Georginio Rutter has agreed a switch to Brighton.
Rutter made his last appearance for the club on Wednesday as Leeds lost 3-0 at home to Middlesbrough in the EFL Cup first round.
Leeds were equally disappointed by last Saturday’s 3-3 draw at home to newly-promoted Portsmouth and it may take a few weeks coaching and a smattering of new signings for them to get their season moving forwards.
Right now they appear to be in an unsettled state and there is every chance of West Brom taking advantage.
Josh Maja to score anytime - 11/4
West Brom lacked a reliable centre-forward last season but the dynamic could change over the next nine months if Josh Maja steers clear of injuries.
Maja was a talented teenager at Sunderland where he bagged 15 goals in the 2018/19 League One campaign.
Now aged 25 he showed his worth for West Brom with three goals in last Saturday’s success at QPR.
Maja looked pacy and strong against the Hoops and he can add to his tally this weekend.
Junior Firpo to be carded - 2/1
Feisty Leeds left back Junior Firpo has been carded 23 times in 73 league appearances in English football and he may collect another caution against West Brom.
Firpo loves to get forward but he often gets caught out of position and may struggle to contend with Albion right winger Tom Fellows, who has made huge strides over the last 12 months.
