West Brom v Coventry: Tips, Predictions and Odds

The race for the Championship play-off places is in the spotlight on Friday night when fifth-placed West Brom host ninth-placed Coventry City in a key game for both teams.

Albion are on track to extend their season by at least two games but they have fallen 16 points behind the automatic promotion spots.

Coventry, meanwhile, have had an up-and-down week, suffering their biggest league defeat of the season when losing 3-0 at home to bogey team Preston last Friday, but the Sky Blues bounced back with a thumping 5-0 win over non-league Maidstone in the FA Cup on Monday night.

West Brom v Coventry Predictions

Draw – 12/5

West Brom are 11/10 favourites for this game as they look to shore up their top-six position and keep challengers Hull, Norwich, Preston and Coventry at arm's length.

They are sound enough in all areas but cannot seem to string together enough positive results to get further up the table. They have won three successive league games just once this season, but even that was in the autumn, and they have not won back-to-back league games yet in 2024.

Their latest outings have brought another mixed bag, with a 2-0 home defeat to play-off rivals Southampton followed by an excellent 3-0 victory at Plymouth and a 1-1 draw at Hull in their last match.

The Baggies are strong at home with 11 wins in 17 home league games, but they don't appeal at such a short price against a capable team, and it may be difficult to separate the sides.

Coventry are four places and five points below Albion in the table, but they have suffered fewer league defeats. A glut of home draws has held them back, and they have registered some decent results on the road with six wins and four draws in their 17 away Championship contests.

Manager Mark Robins was furious with his side's effort in the loss to Preston when they conceded in the first minute and were 3-0 down by the 38th, but they have not conceded in three halves of action since then.

The Sky Blues have lost only one of their last eight away games in all competitions and look capable of getting a point out of this latest away trip.

1-1 correct score – 11/2

A tight game is in prospect, and with both teams having solid defensive records, a bet on a 1-1 correct score could provide some value.

West Brom are averaging just under one goal conceded per game in the league this season, with 32 goals conceded in 34 games, while Coventry are not far behind with 40 goals given up in 34 Championship games.

Coventry have drawn 1-1 in the league on their visits to Swansea, Hull and Leeds this season as well as at Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup, and another draw with this scoreline could be on the cards with goals usually scarce in West Brom's games.

The 3-0 win at Plymouth was the only one of Albion's last eight games to have over 2.5 goals, and in their previous four home games, they have scored just three times and conceded four. One goal for each side in this crucial contest seems a likely outcome.

Darnell Furlong to be booked – 10/3

The first league meeting between these teams was a feisty affair on a Monday night in October, which West Brom won 2-0. Coventry had almost 65% possession and twice as many shots as their opponents, but the visitors used all means available to hold onto their lead.

The majority of the Baggies' starting line-up were booked with six players shown yellow cards in addition to two from Coventry. With no love lost between the teams, the referee could be active again, and Albion defender Darnell Furlong looks like a prime candidate to have his name taken.

The right-back was booked in three consecutive games against Birmingham, Ipswich and Cardiff at the start of February and has been cautioned seven times in his last 18 appearances.
