Wales v Poland: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Wales and Poland are one step away from earning a place at Euro 2024 and the Racing Post's Dan Childs has picked out his three best bets for the clash at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Wales finished third in qualifying Group D with just two defeats from eight games before going on to win 4-1 at home to Finland in last Thursday’s semi-final.

However, they should face a sterner test from the Poles, who triumphed 5-1 at home to Estonia to put themselves on the brink of reaching a fifth successive European Championship.

Wales go into the contest as marginal favourites and are 7/10 to qualify, while Rob Page’s side are 7/5 to get the job done without the need for extra-time or penalties.

Poland are 9/4 to win in regulation time and 21/20 to advance by any means.

Dan Childs' Wales v Poland tips and predictions

Wales to win - 6/4

Wales were slow starters to Euro 2024 qualifying but they are unbeaten in seven matches going into their final assignment and can finish the job by defeating Poland at the Cardiff City Stadium.

The Dragons took advantage of home ties in the 2022 World Cup qualifying playoffs, defeating Austria (2-1) and Ukraine (1-0), and were inspired by another electric atmosphere when brushing aside Finland last Thursday.

Poland are more dangerous opponents than the Finns and can take heart from having beaten the Welsh twice in the 2022 Nations League, winning 2-1 in Wroclaw and 1-0 in Cardiff.

Those successes extended Poland’s unbeaten sequence against Wales to nine matches, but past victories might not count for much when the action begins.

More recently the Poles have generally struggled on their travels.

In qualifying Group E they sustained defeats away to Czech Republic (1-3), Albania (0-2) and Moldova (2-3).

They ended up third in what had looked like a fairly soft section and rounded things off with a pair of disappointing 1-1 draws at home to Moldova and the Czech Republic.

Robert Lewandowski was their top scorer in the group stage with three goals but his powers seem to be waning.

The 35-year-old is in his second season with Barcelona and has netted 13 goals in 27 La Liga appearances.

However, those numbers are a significant drop off from a player who averaged in excess of one goal per game in each of his final three seasons with Bayern Munich.

Wales will need to keep a close eye on Lewandowski, who retains the ability to decide any game with a moment of sheer class.

But their main focus will be in recreating the focus and intensity of their performance against Finland and ensure that Poland are in for a tough night’s work.

Wales rose to an arguably bigger challenge when winning 2-1 at home to Croatia in qualifying Group D and, if they can match those standards, they will have every chance of polishing off the Poles without need of extra-time.

Brennan Johnson to score any time - 10/3

Brennan Johnson popped up with Wales’s crucial third goal against the Finns on Thursday and he looks overpriced to notch against Poland.

The Tottenham attacker has been making steady progress for his club and he delivered a strong performance against Finland despite playing in an unfamiliar central striker’s role.

Johnson’s pace and movement caused plenty of problems for the Finns and those attributes should enable him to get a few sights of goal on Tuesday.

Jordan James to be carded - 3/1

Wales are going to need to be combative in the midfield exchanges to limit the time and space for Poland to execute their possession-based style.

Midfielders Ethan Ampadu and Jordan James will have to play with energy and physicality and it would be a surprise if both got through the game without picking up a yellow card.

James has collected eight cautions for Birmingham in the Championship this season and looks attractively priced to go into referee Daniele Orsato’s notebook.
