Tottenham Hotspur v Aston Villa: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Tottenham Hotspur claimed a stunning EFL Cup win over Manchester City in midweek and they will be looking to get their Premier League top-four bid back on track when they entertain key rivals Aston Villa on Sunday.

Villa sit fourth in the table, five points above their hosts, and are unbeaten on their travels this season but this is their toughest road assignment to date.

The visitors arrive with virtually a clean bill of health, but they do have a midweek UEFA Champions League game on the horizon, while the home side have a few injury issues and Micky van de Ven has joined their list of absentees after picking up a hamstring problem in midweek.

Tottenham Hotspur v Aston Villa Predictions

Tottenham to win - 10/11

Spurs may be boosted by the return of key forward Son Heung-min for Sunday’s game in North London, but even if the South Korean does miss out again they will fancy their chances of claiming a three-point haul.

The midweek win over Man City was their best display of the season and that should provide a huge confidence boost for a side who have endured a mixed start to the campaign.

Ange Postecoglou’s troops have four defeats in nine games, but their struggles have come almost exclusively on the road.

They have just one home loss across all competitions, a 1-0 defeat to rivals Arsenal back in September in a game that they dominated, while they’ve won their other six fixtures at this venue.

Villa have 10 points from a possible 12 on their travels, but they have only faced one team currently in the top half of the table away from home so far, Fulham who sit 10th.

Tottenham won 4-0 at Villa Park when these sides last met back in March of last season and their fine home form suggests they can secure the victory they need to reignite their own top-four challenge after a lacklustre start to the league campaign.

Dejan Kulusevski over 0.5 assists - 7/2

Lilywhites playmaker Dejan Kulusevski has just one Premier League assist to his name after nine games, but that stat doesn’t offer a true reflection of his creative exploits this season.

The Swede set up both goals in the win over City, meaning he has three assists in two EFL Cup games, while he has two assists in four games for his country in the Nations League since the season began.

Kulusevski has a pass success rate of over 82% and provides on average 3.2 key passes per 90 minutes.

The 24-year-old has created three big chances in this competition according to the official Premier League website, with only Son having created more among his team-mates, so at a big price he looks a decent contender to record an assist at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

John McGinn to be booked - 8/5

It may still be relatively early in the season, but this could be a huge fixture in terms of the top four battle given the fact that City, Arsenal and Liverpool are widely expected to fill three of those spots.

Villa and Spurs are among a group of teams fighting for the other UEFA Champions league berth and. with a lot potentially at stake here, we may see a few cards dished out to both sets of players.

Visiting midfielder John McGinn saw red the last time these sides met and looks a good option to be booked on Sunday.

The Scotland international picked up nine yellow cards in 34 Premier League games last term, as well as his the one sending-off, while he has has two bookings in seven outings this season.

McGinn had two fouls in Villa’s stalemate with Bournemouth last time out and has committed at least two in three of his seven league appearances.

Two fouls may be enough for a card as a visiting player at Spurs, so he looks worth some consideration among a number of potential candidates in the to be booked market.
