Swindon Town v Colchester United: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Ian Holloway is among the most experienced managers on the EFL circuit and is having a positive impact on Swindon, who have been edging away from the fourth tier relegation zone.

The Robins have won only four of 23 league matches but their recent improvement continued at the weekend when they picked up a 1-1 draw at in-form Bromley.

Another difficult test is in store for them against Colchester, who are unbeaten in their last 11 fixtures.

Danny Cowley’s side have shared the points in 12 of their 22 fixtures and were involved in another stalemate on Sunday when drawing 1-1 at home to Doncaster.

Swindon Town v Colchester United betting tips and predictions

Swindon - 6/4

Fourth-bottom Swindon have won back-to-back League Two home games for the first time this season and they can get the better of in-form Colchester in Wiltshire.

Given their status as a former Premier League club, Swindon are far from comfortable with their position in the lower reaches of the fourth tier.

Town supporters have been voicing their displeasure with the club’s owner, Clem Morfuni, but they are warming to their eccentric manager, Ian Holloway, who has made a hugely positive impact in his first two months at the helm.

Holloway’s side advanced to the last 16 of the EFL Trophy with a superb 2-1 triumph at League One highflyers Wycombe and they have taken eight points from their last five League Two matches.

There is still plenty of work ahead to make sure of fourth tier survival but Swindon are performing at a consistent level and are no longer fazed when things go against them.

They fell behind at Bromley on Sunday after 69 minutes, but were level just three minutes later and finished the stronger side against a physical opposition who hadn’t lost in the league since October.

Facing Colchester, who are unbeaten since early November, will be a very similar challenge, but it is one which Swindon are likely to meet head on.

Colchester have recovered impressively from a slow start to the season and, given the tight nature of the division, they may feel there is scope for a playoff push.

However, they are up against another in-form side and are set to tackle the fixture without star attacker Samson Tovide, who has missed the last two games with an unspecified injury.

The Essex outfit have been playing well but they drew 1-1 at home to Doncaster on Sunday and may come up just short on New Year’s Day.

Harry Smith to score any time - 5/2

Holloway has had a positive impact on several Swindon players, including centre-forward Harry Smith, who is the club’s top scorer with nine goals in 17 league appearances.

Smith was limited to a substitute’s role in the 1-1 draw at Bromley and should be feeling refreshed for the visit of Colchester.

He bagged a hat-trick in last month’s 3-1 victory at home to Fleetwood and looks a tempting 5/2 shot to increase his tally.

Jamie McDonnell to be carded - 7/2

Swindon have looked a more robust team under Holloway and their physical approach will ask questions of the away side.

The midfield area will be ultra competitive and Colchester’s Jamie McDonnell will be more than happy to do his fair share of the dirty work.

McDonnell has been booked in each of his last two appearances and looks an overpriced 7/2 wager for a third successive caution.
