Swansea City v Cardiff City: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Cardiff City find themselves bottom of the Championship after losing their opening two assignments to nil and that doesn’t bode well for a South Wales derby with Swansea City, who have dominated their recent rivalry.

The Bluebirds limped to a 2-0 loss at home to Sunderland in their Championship curtain-raiser and were then blown away by Burnley at Turf Moor last weekend, suffering a 5-0 hiding.

Swansea also started their season with defeat, going down 1-0 at Middlesbrough, but last weekend’s routine 3-0 success at home to Preston has them back on track and in a confident mood.

The pair recorded one win apiece in last season’s head-to-head series, each winning 2-0 in the home fixture, but that is the Bluebirds’ only success over their Welsh neighbours since 2021.

Swansea City v Cardiff City betting tips and predictions

Swansea to win - 19/20

Swansea have won five of their last six meetings with their South Welsh rivals, which includes three straight played at home, and they can maintain that dominance on Sunday.

Swans boss Luke Williams favours a possession-based approach and their slick style may be too much for an injury-hit Cardiff side to handle.

The Bluebirds must be feeling pretty flat, having lost their opening two games without scoring and conceding seven goals, and quality has looked thin on the ground.

With Swansea having also ran out impressive 3-0 winners at home to Preston last weekend, this may be a bad time for the Bluebirds to be meeting them.

Cardiff have now lost four straight Championship clashes, having closed out last season with a 4-1 loss at home to Middlesbrough and a 5-2 mauling at relegated Rotherham.

That paints a worrying picture, especially as they’ve now lost eight of their last 11 league games, and manager Erol Bulut has not hidden his frustration with their lack of striking options.

On-loan Wilfried Kanga, who arrived from Hertha Berlin, is currently their only recognisable option with Kion Etete and Isaak Davies plagued by injuries.

So, on current form, this looks a tough ask for them against a Swansea side that have won five of their last eight competitive home games, losing only once.

The Swans’ injury situation is much healthier and, deployed in their favoured 4-2-3-1 formation, they will be looking to starve Cardiff of the ball and force them into mistakes.

Swansea to win to nil - 5/2

Not only are Swansea fancied to make the most of home advantage, but they can do so with a clean sheet against a Cardiff side still awaiting their first goal of the Championship campaign.

The Bluebirds look to be lacking firepower and manager Bulut is desperate to bring in another striker before the transfer window slams shut, so it may take a couple of weeks before they are seen to best effect.

Interestingly, this has not been a fixture for goals down the years. Both teams have scored in only one of the last 14 meetings and Swansea have won eight of those fixtures to nil.

So, with Swansea fancied to claim maximum points, it may also be worth backing them to record a shutout at 5/2.

Swansea’s last five league wins over this season and last have been accompanied with clean sheets and both teams have scored in only two of their last 12 league matches.

Correct-score bettors may want to be even more adventurous and plunge for a 2-0 Swansea victory at 17/2. That was the scoreline the last two times that the Swans have entertained their bitter rivals.
