Swansea v Cardiff: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Cardiff head into this derby showdown with hosts Swansea on the back of a four-match winning run that has kept their Championship play-off hopes alive.

The Bluebirds have seen off Stoke, Bristol City, Huddersfield Town and top-two chasing Ipswich Town during that impressive run of results.

Swansea v Cardiff betting tips and predictions

Cardiff to win - 14/5

Cardiff have never done the double over their fierce South Wales rivals Swansea in over 70 years of combat, but this is the season when they are set to end that record.

Erol Bulut’s Bluebirds were too good for a Swans side managed by Michael Duff when the sides met at the Cardiff City Stadium in September, the home team running out 2-0 victors.

Duff has gone, replaced by Luke Williams, who is finding life in charge of Swansea a struggle.

Bulut, in contrast, appears to be getting stronger and stronger and currently has his side on a four-match winning burst which has vaulted them on to the fringes of the play-off conversation.

It was the most recent of those wins - last weekend’s 2-1 success over Ipswich - which will have got them believing, especially the manner of the triumph with two goals in added time sending the home crowd wild.

Clearly they will need to control their emotions heading to Swansea and Bulut, a man who has played in and managed Istanbul derbies in his Fenerbahce days as well as taken charge of this bitter contest, knows what is required.

For Williams this is a whole new experience and it might not have come at a particularly good time.

It’s four wins in 13 under Williams which isn’t awful but with sides below them showing signs of life it does mean the Swans are being dragged into the relegation scrap.

Last week at Bristol City they were desperate, losing 1-0 in a game in which they utterly based possession - 73 percent - but didn’t manage to fire off a single shot on target.

They look light in attack and it has to be a worry that they have won fewer games at home than they have away. Or that Cardiff have won away.

Perry Ng Over 0.5 Shots on Target - 11/4

Buccaneering right-back Perry Ng must be a contender for player of the season at the Cardiff City Stadium and expect him to show his worth once more on Saturday.

The former Crewe defender has built a career around helping out in attack as well as at the back, but this season, for the first time, the goals have started to flow as well.

Ng’s winner at Bristol City at the start of the month was the sixth goal of his most productive goalscoring season. He also has four assists to his name.

Ng is averaging 0.8 shots per game so the 11/4 he gets one on target at the looks a bit of value.

Number of Cards in Match - Over 4.5 - 5/6

There will be plenty of focus on discipline come kick-off time where losing it or keeping it could prove critical in who wins or loses the game.

There is nothing exceptional about either team’s cards record in 2023/24 - Swansea have collected 75 yellows and three reds, Cardiff 69 yellows and a single red.

The atmosphere was electric when these teams met at the Cardiff City Stadium in the autumn though only two yellow cards were shown by referee Sam Barrott.

David Webb takes charge at the weekend, the third Swansea fixture he has done, the first two producing nine yellows in total. Webb has presided over 27 matches this term, mainly in the Championship, issuing 108 yellows (exactly four a game) and a lone red.

Cards have been set at 4.5 and overs looks the play, certainly based on last season’s meetings rather than this season’s.

Last season, the first fixture, at Swansea, saw six yellow cards and a red for Cardiff frontman Callum Robinson with the return yielding seven yellows.
