Sunderland v Sheffield Wednesday: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Sunderland kicked off their new era under Regis Le Bris with a welcome win at Cardiff last Saturday but they'll not be taking Danny Rohl's rampant Sheffield Wednesday lightly.

The Black Cats had a terrible end to last season but any negativity was left on Wearside as Jack Clarke inspired them to a 2-0 success at the Cardiff City Stadium.

For Wednesday, last season's great escapees, the good times continue to roll with two wins in a week and they will fancy their chances.

Draw - 23/10

Wednesday will have fond memories of the Stadium of Light where they completed last year's incredible escape, though they may have to settle for one point rather than all three this time round.

A 2-0 win at Sunderland capped a magnificent end to 2023/24 for Danny Rohl's Owls, who had taken 14 points from their last six matches to beat the relegation noose.

And the feelgood factor is still with them judging by their fabulous 4-0 drubbing of Plymouth last Sunday and subsequent 2-1 win at Hull in the EFL Cup.

Wednesday could not be in a happier place though spirits are up at Sunderland as well, where the team assembled by new boss Le Bris produced a spirited defensive display last Saturday to win 2-0 at Cardiff.

It was their defence, marshalled by the excellent Luke O'Nien, which impressed most, restricting the home side to just four shots on target despite having 65 percent possession.

Flashes of class from ace wide man Clarke were also significant in a counter-attacking performance which hints at a new direction for the Black Cats.

Le Bris still, however, hasn't addressed his central striking options. Nineteen-year-old Eliezer Mayenda didn't look the answer in the role in South Wales and Nazariy Rusyn was handed the job on Tuesday night at Preston in the EFL Cup, having a solitary shot in a 2-0 loss.

That toothlessness which Sunderland have is going to make them hard to back for now.

And, of course, while they were happy to play on the counter at Cardiff, will fans accept that tactic at home to a buoyant Wednesday.

Both defences looked strong last weekend so everything points to a tight, low scorer which could well end in a draw.

Over 4.5 Sheffield Wednesday corners - 5/6

Rohl has got Wednesday playing with a real positive intent, and while Sunderland's defence will take all the breaching the visitors can at least chalk up five corners.

Last week, admittedly at home to a Plymouth side who they utterly bossed, Wednesday recorded 15 corners.

Sunderland, at a Cardiff side who looked limited, only conceded four corners.

Wednesday will probably ask more questions of the Black Cats than Cardiff did judging by the 31 shots they unloaded against Wayne Rooney's bamboozled Argyle.

Yann Valery to be booked - 3/1

Former Southampton and Angers full-back Yann Valery enjoyed a player-of-the-match debut for Wednesday last week.

Right-back was a problem area for the Owls but Valery settled in nicely, bombing forward often and without really having his defensive mettle tested.

That will change on Sunday when he has to shackle Clarke, one of the best wingers in the Championship and a player who will cause Valery problems.

The Tunisian defender dished out four fouls on Sunday and got away with them. He may well be repeating the feat against the tricky Clarke and a packed Stadium of Light might just persuade referee Dean Whitestone to reach for his pocket.
