Sunderland v Portsmouth: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Sunderland's impressive home form is powering their Championship promotion challenge and the Black Cats face poor travellers Portsmouth on Sunday.

Sunderland v Portsmouth betting tips and predictions

Sunderland to win and both teams to score - 12/5

Home advantage has been vital for both Sunderland and Portsmouth in this season's Championship so the Black Cats should be confident of claiming three points at the Stadium of Light.

Promoted Portsmouth have boosted their chances of staying up by winning four of their last five matches at Fratton Park.

They beat Preston 3-1 in November before seeing off Bristol City 3-0 and Coventry 4-1 in December and John Mousinho's men kicked off the New Year with a morale-boosting 4-0 home victory over Swansea.

Those successes on the south coast have not been translated into positive results on the road, however, and an eighth away defeat of the campaign looks likely at Sunderland.

Portsmouth should be backed to get on the scoresheet at the Stadium of Light, as both teams have scored in six of the Black Cats' last seven league games.

Four of Sunderland's last six wins were by a 2-1 scoreline, including their New Year's Day victory over promotion rivals Sheffield United.

Manager Regis Le Bris will have been delighted with that win over the Blades, which left his side just two points off the automatic-promotion places.

The Sunderland boss, like his Portsmouth counterpart Mousinho, has been working with an injury-hit squad over the festive period and key centre-back Dan Ballard is set to miss out again on Sunday.

The Black Cats have the attacking quality to win an entertaining game against Portsmouth, who have lost their last three away fixtures, conceding nine goals in defeats at Derby, Watford and Bristol City.

Wilson Isidor to be first goalscorer - 9/2

Sunderland's French forward Wilson Isidor started the season at Zenit St Petersburg but he has not taken long to settle into the Championship.

Isidor has scored in two of the Black Cats' three games since Christmas, against Blackburn and Sheffield United, to take his tally for the season to seven goals in 19 league starts.

Talented attacking midfielders Patrick Roberts, Eliezer Mayenda and Adil Aouchiche should continue to create chances for the frontman, who is worth backing to open the scoring on Sunday.

Isidor had five shots against the Blades, a team who had conceded only 14 goals in 24 league matches before their defeat at the Stadium of Light.

He should be looking forward to the clash with Portsmouth, who have shipped 29 goals in their first 12 away games this season and were 3-0 down inside 35 minutes against Bristol City on their most recent road trip.

Andre Dozzell to be booked - 7/4

Portsmouth are averaging just under three bookings per away game in the Championship and there may be some mistimed tackles from the visitors after a hectic schedule over the Christmas period.

Attacking midfielder Callum Lang has been cautioned five times in 10 starts on the road while experienced centre-back Marlon Pack is another leading card candidate.

At the prices, though, Pompey midfielder Andre Dozzell is the most appealing option to be shown a card at the Stadium of Light.

Dozzell is expected to be deployed as a defensive midfielder and he could have his work cut out against Sunderland's fleet-footed attackers.

The former Ipswich and QPR man has been booked five times in 16 Championship starts this season and three of those cautions have been picked up away from home.
