Stockport County v Peterborough United: Prediction, Tips and Odds

December has been a bumpy month for Stockport County, who have sustained two defeats in three League One outings and suffered a 3-2 loss at home to League Two Bradford City in the EFL Trophy second round.

And the Hatters will be looking for a response at home to Peterborough United after last weekend’s defeat at Stevenage, which was among their poorer performances of the campaign.

However, they are in fifth place, nine points better off than Posh, who are in danger of falling below pre-season expectations.

Peterborough were 4-3 winners at home to Crawley Town last Saturday, but they sit closer to the relegation zone (five points clear) than the play-offs (seven points adrift).

Stockport County v Peterborough United betting tips and predictions

Stockport to win - 4/5

Stockport have been inside the play-off places for the last six weeks and they can ensure a top-six placing on Christmas Day by defeating Peterborough at Edgeley Park.

A healthy budget has assisted Stockport’s transition from League Two to League One football, but they can still be delighted with their efforts as they look forward to pushing for a second successive promotion.

A potential cloud on the horizon is a possibility of the imminent departure of Aston Villa loanee Louie Barry, who is the division’s top scorer with 14 goals.

Barry has been touted for a New Year loan switch to a Championship club and would leave a big hole if he was to be recalled.

However, the Hatters have four more games to play before the opening of the transfer window and will be hoping to put themselves in an even stronger position before a replacement for Barry needs to be brought in.

And the first of those matches looks a very winnable fixture against a Peterborough side hamstrung by their inability to keep out the opposition.

Posh are the division’s second highest scorers, but they also have the level’s second leakiest defence and have not kept a clean sheet in any of 19 league fixtures.

Their manager, Darren Ferguson, has focused on trying to outscore the opposition, but his team’s offensive potential was dramatically reduced earlier this month when classy attacker Kwame Poku suffered a serious hamstring strain.

Poku is one of the league’s top talents and his 10 goals and five assists have had a huge impact in terms of keeping Posh away from the lower end of the table.

Ferguson may try to target a few new defenders and a Poku replacement in January, but his team look vulnerable in the short term and they may struggle to avoid a sixth successive loss on their League One travels.

Kyle Wootton to score any time - 7/5

While Barry has regularly hogged the headlines for Stockport, centre-forward Kyle Wootton has quietly got on with his business and done an excellent job by contributing six League One goals and three assists.

Wootton has netted in four of his last seven home appearances and he looks a solid 7/5 wager to add to his tally.

Over 3.5 goals - 6/4

Peterborough matches are usually entertaining affairs with goals at both ends.

Their 19 league fixtures have generated 72 goals (an average of 3.79 per game) so backing over 3.5 goals looks a worthwhile ploy at 6/4.
