St Patrick's Athletic will face Istanbul Basaksehir in the first leg of their UEFA Conference League play-off round tie on Thursday as both teams aim to take a giant step towards the league phase.
Stephen Kenny's side have already seen off Vaduz of Liechtenstein and Azerbaijan's Sabah to reach this stage, but they will face a huge step up in quality against a Basaksehir team that have become European regulars over recent years.
St Patrick's Athletic v Istanbul Basaksehir will not be available to watch on TV in the UK.
The first leg of this UEFA Conference League play-off round tie will kick-off at 19:45 BST on Thursday 22nd August and will be contested at Tallaght Stadium, Dublin.
St Patrick's Athletic have never made it to the league phase or group stage of a European competition and they are looking to become just the third League of Ireland side to do so, following in the footsteps of Shamrock Rovers and Dundalk.
The Saints are unbeaten in Europe this season, winning three of their four games, but they currently sit a disappointing seventh in the League of Ireland Premier Division, a full 16 points behind leaders Shelbourne.
This will be St Patrick's first-ever competitive meeting with Turkish opposition.
Istanbul Basaksehir have won all four of their qualifiers in this season's UEFA Conference League, thrashing San Marino's La Fiorita 10-1 on aggregate before seeing off Iberia 1999 of Georgia 3-0 over two legs.
The Grey Owls reached the last 16 of the UEFA Conference League two seasons ago and were involved in the UEFA Champions League group stage as recently as the 2020/21 campaign - beating Manchester United in that competition on home soil.
The Turkish outfit have never previously faced opposition from the Republic of Ireland.
Zachary Elbouzedi scored the winner for St Patrick's in the second leg of their tie with Sabah and the former Lincoln City and Bolton Wanderers midfielder should once again play a key role.
Fellow midfielder Romal Palmer should also feature and will know all about Basaksehir, as he is currently on loan at St Patrick's from Turkish club Goztepe.
There should be some familiar names in Basaksehir's line-up, with Poland international striker Krzysztof Piatek, ex-Hull City midfielder Dimitrios Pelkas and former Fulham defender Jerome Opoku all set to feature.
