Southampton v Preston: Tips, Predictions and Odds

Southampton's last-gasp winner at Birmingham City has kept them in the automatic promotion picture but another stern test is on the horizon with the arrival of Preston on Wednesday night.

Preston have their own ambitions of getting promoted to the Premier League this season via the playoffs and this clash at St Mary's Stadium will be another high-pressure encounter for both sides.

Southampton v Preston betting tips and predictions

Double Chance - Draw or Preston - 7/4

Preston have proven to be a thorn in the side of many of their fellow clubs striving for promotion from the Championship this season.

Their combative style under manager Ryan Lowe might not be the most pleasing on the eye but it has certainly unsettled the more attacking teams in the division.

Preston have beaten the likes of Leeds United and Ipswich Town since Christmas and they will head to Southampton confident of getting something from their trip south.

These sides played out a 2-2 draw at Deepdale in October as part of Preston's strong start to the Championship campaign.

Southampton were on an impressive unbeaten run themselves but have looked fragile in recent weeks after defeats to Bristol City, Hull City and Millwall.

A 4-3 win against the 10 men of Birmingham was far from convincing from Russell Martin's side and it would not be a shock to see them drop points against Preston, who are 7/4 in the Double Chance market to head back to Lancashire with something to show for their efforts.

Will Keane to score anytime - 7/2

Will Keane's 12 strikes make him Preston's top goalscorer so far this Championship season and he is well priced to find the back of the net on Wednesday night.

Keane has had a somewhat nomadic career and is currently enjoying his second spell at Deepdale, eight years on from his first loan stint.

Scoring 12 of Preston's 47 goals so far this season in the Championship, the former Manchester United academy star has been key in putting the Lilywhites in the promotion picture.

Keane found the back of the net in Preston's last away game in a 3-0 victory at Coventry City and is worth considering to score his not-so-unlucky 13th league goal of the campaign at Southampton this week.

Liam Lindsay to be booked - 15/8

As mentioned previously, Preston are not afraid to ruffle a few feathers with their approach under manager Lowe.

That's highlighted with the fact Preston have been issued 81 cards in the Championship this season, with only Ipswich and Southampton (both 82) receiving more.

Former Barnsley and Stoke City defender Liam Lindsay has picked eight yellow cards in the league already this term, with no other Preston player receiving more.

The Scot will have plenty on his plate on Wednesday, with the likes of Adam Armstrong, Che Adams and Sekou Mara to deal with in the Southampton attack.

Considering his recent record of getting in hot water with officials, it would be little surprise to see Lindsay add to his tally of bookings of the season in this encounter at St Mary's Stadium.

The referee on the night, Ben Toner, heads into this match on the back of dishing out seven yellow cards in his last game between Portsmouth and Oxford United at the weekend in League One.

Toner has now brandished 30 yellow cards in his last five games in charge and his worn-down pencil might well be scribing the name Lindsay this week.
