Southampton v Newcastle United: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Newcastle United will be looking for a swift response from last weekend's Premier League defeat to Bournemouth when they head south to face rock-bottom Southampton at St Mary's on Saturday.

A 4-1 loss to the Cherries at St James' Park brought an end to the Magpies' nine-game winning streak in all competitions, a result that also dropped the club out of the UEFA Champions League places.

Southampton suffered a fifth successive top-flight defeat under manager Ivan Juric when losing 3-2 at Nottingham Forest on Sunday, leaving the former Roma boss without a single point since taking charge.

Southampton v Newcastle United betting tips and predictions

Alexander Isak to score first - 10/3

It is tough to make a case for Southampton avoiding relegation, as they find themselves 10 points adrift at the bottom of the table and with just one league win from 22 attempts.

The Saints' decision to replace Russell Martin with Juric has failed to provide the boost they sought, with the former Croatia international losing all five top-flight matches in charge.

Southampton's only success under the 49-year-old is the 3-0 FA Cup third-round triumph over Championship outfit Swansea City, who are on a poor run of form and are slipping down the standings in England's second tier.

Saturday's visit of Newcastle, who defeated the Saints 1-0 in the reverse fixture on the opening weekend of the campaign despite seeing Fabian Schar sent off in the first half, will be another huge challenge for the basement boys.

The south coast outfit have lost the last six meetings against the Magpies, who last lost to Southampton in November 2020, and this could turn out to be another afternoon of misery for the hosts.

With Newcastle heavy favourites to win this contest, other markets need to be looked at for value and one of those is the first goalscorer department, with Sweden international Alexander Isak an appealing price at 10/3.

The 25-year-old had scored in eight league games in a row before drawing a blank against Bournemouth and he will be itching to get back on the goal trail, having netted nine times in six appearances in all competitions prior to that defeat.

Isak has opened the scoring for the Magpies in three of his last five outings in all competitions and he should get plenty of opportunities to grab the first strike against a Saints defence that has conceded 50 top-flight goals.

Bruno Guimaraes to register an assist - 4/1

Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes started the season off slowly, registering just one league assist in the first four months, but his performances have improved since then and he has become the lynchpin for his side once more.

The Brazil international grabbed two assists in the 3-3 draw against Liverpool in December and added another to his tally in the 4-0 thrashing of Ipswich Town at Portman Road just before Christmas.

Assists also came in the wins over Tottenham and Wolves this month and, if he is given the freedom and space to play at St Mary's, which is likely given the poor form and defensive displays of Southampton, then he could carve open the hosts.

A red card to be shown - 5/1

Southampton have struggled with discipline this season and they have picked up a division-leading 65 yellow cards and a joint-high three reds.

Newcastle have been better behaved, receiving 44 yellows, but recent meetings between these two clubs have proven to be feisty affairs and another could be in the offing.

On the opening weekend, Swiss defender Schar was sent off for the Magpies in the first half of the 1-0 win over the Saints following an altercation with Ben Brereton Diaz.

In the League Cup semi-final tie in 2022/23, Southampton's Duje Caleta-Car was given his marching orders in the first leg, before Guimaraes was dismissed in the second leg.

That means there has been a red card in three of the last four meetings and, given what is at stake in Saturday's contest, with the Saints scrapping for their lives and Newcastle battling for a top-four finish, the red mist may descend again.
