Southampton v Hull: Tips, Predictions and Odds

The Saints are looking to maintain their promotion push to return to the Premier League, while Hull have ambitions of getting into the Championship playoffs as they head to St Mary’s looking for their fourth successive away win.

Southampton v Hull Predictions

Southampton & both teams to score – 2/1

Southampton look well placed to make an immediate return to the Premier League but they can ill-afford to take things easy if they are to grab an automatic-promotion spot and need to be at the top of their game to see off Hull on Tuesday.

The Saints saw their 25-match unbeaten run ended by a 3-1 defeat at Bristol City last Tuesday, but Russell Martin’s team responded perfectly with an impressive 2-0 success at West Brom three days later.

It has been their form at St Mary’s that has been particularly impressive and they have won their last nine matches on their own patch, but there is further encouragement for them to be positive against the Tigers.

Leeds leapfrogged Southampton into second with a 2-0 win at Plymouth on Saturday, but this is the south coast outfit’s game in hand and they simply have to take advantage.

They are understandably a short price to claim three more points, but it is worth taking the chance that Hull can find the net, even though the Saints have conceded in just two of their last seven at home.

Liam Rosenior’s side, who are level on points with Coventry who occupy the final playoff place, have been excellent on the road lately, winning their last three away games against Sunderland, Rotherham and Huddersfield.

The Tigers have failed to score in just two of their away league matches this season and proved they can mix it with the best when they won 1-0 at leaders Leicester in September, so bank on the visitors to still cause problems and find the net, even if they cannot stop Southampton claiming another home win.

Adam Armstrong to score at any time – 6/5

Southampton striker Adam Armstrong is just two goals behind the Championship’s leading marksman, Blackburn’s Sammie Szmodics, with 16 for the campaign and there looks a strong chance that the Geordie will be able to add to that tally.

Armstrong, who also has 11 assists for the Saints this season, should be hungry after missing out on all the fun when they beat Huddersfield 5-3 in their last home game.

It is not as if he has been doing anything wrong though. His tally of 38 shots on target this season is double the number of his nearest teammate and he has had at least three efforts in seven of his last eight appearances.

Armstrong has registered a goal-bound attempt in 11 of his last 12 showings and can boost his goalscoring record in this one.

Over 6 Southampton corners – 8/11

With so many recent home victories under their belt, the Saints can be relied upon to be positive and one market in which they are set to dominate is corners.

No other team in the Championship can get near to their corners average in home matches as Martin’s team have forced 7.87 per game at St Mary’s this season - Watford are the only other team to have a figure of more than seven.

The Tigers already concede an average of 6.38 per away game, so against a team looking to push forward in wide areas, that figure could easily be eclipsed, so it is wise to take the 8/11 that the Saints will force at least seven in Tuesday’s contest.
