Southampton gained some respite from their miserable season when they won 2-1 at Ipswich Town last week, but they could have their work cut out against Burnley in Saturday’s FA Cup fourth-round clash at St Mary’s.
Burnley or draw double chance - 21/20
Southampton gave themselves a lift last week when they gained only their second league win of the season when they claimed a 2-1 victory at fellow relegation battlers Ipswich Town, but their situation still looks grave.
They are 10 points from Premier League safety, which is more than they have accumulated in their 24 games to date, and they look vulnerable to Championship high-flyers Burnley in the FA Cup at St Mary's on Saturday.
The south coast outfit may take some confidence from beating two other second-tier teams - Swansea City and Stoke City - in cup competitions this season, but Scott Parker’s Clarets represent a much tougher task.
The Lancashire team are second in the Championship, five points behind leaders Leeds and have conceded just nine goals in 31 league games this season.
With nine clean sheets in their last 10 games, they are entitled to be confident that they can keep the top flight’s weakest forward line in check.
Five of those matches have ended in goalless draws, which means the double-chance option could be a safer one with the bet winning if the visitors take the game to extra-time, but this is unlikely to be a routine win for a team who have proved to be well off the pace in the Premier League this season.
Flynn Downes to be shown a card - 15/8
Flynn Downes has been missing from the Saints midfield for the last couple of games but hopes are high that he will be involved on Saturday.
That looks to be good news for those looking for a bookings bet as Downes tends not to shirk from the heat of the action and that frequently brings him to the officials’ attention.
Downs has picked up nine Premier League bookings this season and a further yellow in the Saints’ EFL Cup quarter-final defeat to Liverpool, while he has picked up four cautions in his last five appearances.
That run included a yellow card in the 3-1 home defeat to Manchester United when he entered the fray only as a 72nd-minute substitute.
It is little surprise to see him at 15/8 to go into the book again but that still looks to be worth an investment.
Jaidon Anthony over 1.5 shots - 11/10
Burnley have a great shout of gaining automatic promotion back to the Premier League this season, despite having scored just 37 goals in their 31 Championship games of the current campaign.
But, for wide attacker Jaidon Anthony, it has not been for the want of trying and he could register at least two goal attempts against the Saints at St Mary’s on Saturday.
The 25-year-old has scored just three goals for Parker’s side this term and while that is not an earth-shattering statistic, it is worth noting that he has registered more than one goal attempt in 14 of his last 18 appearances for the Turf Moor outfit.
The quality of opposition Burnley face this weekend will not be much different to a regulation Championship side so 11/10 about him having two or more attempts should be snapped up.
