Slovenia v Denmark Prediction, Tips and Odds: Familiar foes to entertain in Stuttgart

Slovenia and Denmark will have a strong understanding of one another after they locked horns in Euros qualifying and it could be an entertaining encounter when they renew their rivalry in their Group D opener at the Stuttgart Arena.

Denmark finished above Slovenia in their qualifying group, but both amassed 22 points from their 10 games, winning seven, drawing one and losing two of their fixtures.

The pair played out a 1-1 draw in Slovenia in June before Denmark recorded a 2-1 victory in Copenhagen in November, which ultimately rewarded them with top spot courtesy of a stronger head-to-head record.

With fixtures against England and Serbia to come, this could be a pivotal fixture in the battle to reach the round of 16 and both sides will be determined to get off to a winning start.

The Danes are 8/11 for victory, with the draw available at 5/2 and Slovenia 17/4 to spring what many feel would be a surprise.

Slovenia v Denmark betting tips and predictions

Both teams to score - 1/1

Denmark have European Championship pedigree, having been crowned as shock winners in 1992, as well as making the semi-finals at the delayed Euro 2020, whereas Slovenia are making their first European Championship appearance since 2000.

That goes a long way to explaining why the Danes are odds-on for victory, but Slovenia have lost only two of their last 21 internationals and are not a side to be underestimated.

Slovenia possess a world-class shot-stopper in Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak, while the emergence of lively RB Leipzig forward Benjamin Sesko has provided them with more than a sprinkling of star quality.

Denmark, meanwhile, have an abundance of Premier League and Bundesliga talent among their ranks and have also unearthed a potential striking superstar in Manchester United’s Rasmus Hojlund.

A midfield featuring Christian Eriksen, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Thomas Delaney oozes class, but it is easy to see the Danes being frustrated by Slovenia and the best value on offer could be backing both teams to score.

That bet landed in both of those head-to-head battles in qualifying and a goal should soon see things open up with neither side going to want to kickstart proceedings with a defeat.

Both teams have scored in five of Slovenia’s last seven internationals and they defeated Portugal in one of their final friendlies, while the net has bulged at both ends in five of Denmark’s last eight.

Joakim Maehle to score or assist - 2/1

In what may be a free-flowing contest, Denmark’s flying wing-back Joakim Maehle could have a key role to play.

Some players up their game when they put on the jersey of their country and that is definitely the case with Maehle, who has 11 goals and seven assists from his 45 caps.

The 27-year-old will be an extra attacker at times and is likely to spend more time in Slovenia’s half than his own, with manager Kasper Hjulmand wanting his left-back to take up advanced positions.

Maehle was on the scoresheet in Denmark’s 2-1 victory at home to Slovenia in November and he scored twice and grabbed an assist in five appearances at Euro 2020.

At 2/1 the Wolfsburg man makes plenty of appeal to get on the scoresheet or tee up one of his team-mates.

Petar Stojanovic to be shown a card - 15/8

Slovenia’s Petar Stojanovic, who can be deployed as a right-back or a right winger, looks a decent card candidate in a contest likely to be played at a high tempo.

Denmark should dominate possession and may create the better goalscoring opportunities, which may bring plenty of fouls from their opponents.

Stojanovic picked up eight yellow cards in 28 appearances for Sampdoria in Serie B this season, while his 52 caps have yielded 14 bookings.
