Sheffield Wednesday v Sunderland: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Sunderland have been losing ground in the automatic promotion race but are fancied to return to winning ways against mid-table Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.

February has been a mixed month for the Black Cats, who have taken seven points from five games, but there is lots to look forward to for Regis Le Bris and his side.

They are fourth and know that a victory over Sheffield Wednesday would take them to within five points of second-placed Sheffield United, who face a tricky weekend fixture at Queens Park Rangers.

While Sunderland are hoping to revive their top-two push, Wednesday want to maintain their faint play-off hopes.

The Owls are positioned six points and seven places outside of the top six and have a few questions to answer after last Friday’s 4-0 defeat away to Burnley.

Sunderland to win - 29/20

Back-to-back defeats have dented Sunderland’s promotion push but a strong response should be expected when the Black Cats tackle Sheffield Wednesday in south Yorkshire.

It has been a superb season for Sunderland, who hadn’t lost consecutive games until the recent reverses away to Leeds United (1-2) and at home to Hull City (0-1).

Sunderland shouldn’t be too dispirited because their performances in the last two games were of a reasonable standard.

They took the lead against Leeds and were looking fairly comfortable until conceding twice inside the final 20 minutes.

And they were on the front foot for the majority of the match against Hull, which was decided by a calamitous goalkeeping error from Anthony Patterson.

The disappointment of losing to Hull was compounded by an injury to winger Enzo Le Fee, who is set for a spell on the sidelines.

But Le Fee’s half-time replacement, Romaine Mundle was back on the pitch after a three-month lay off and his return could be key to helping the Black Cats to get back on track.

Sunderland will be desperate to avoid another loss and have a good chance to end their mini-slump against the Owls, who have dropped into the bottom half after three defeats in the last four matches.

Definite progress has been made by Wednesday, who have moved on from last season’s battle against the drop and are pushing towards the play-offs, but their inconsistent home form is letting them down.

Danny Rohl’s side have won only five of 17 home league fixtures and the last of those successes was a 4-2 triumph over Derby on New Year’s Day.

At times they have played with excellent intensity, but there has been a lot of loose defending which has contributed to a goals against tally of 54 - the fifth-highest in the division.

Wednesday should give Sunderland a decent game, but the finer details may let them down and allow their visitors to return to winning ways.

Wilson Isidor to score at any time - 5/2

Powerful striker Wilson Isidor has been one of many success stories in Sunderland’s season and he could have a key role to play in getting their campaign back on track.

The 24-year-old has netted in four of the last six games and looks good value at 5/2 to score at any time.

Jobe Bellingham to be booked - 9/2

Sunderland are an inexperienced side and a few of their players have a bit to learn when it comes to staying on the right side of the disciplinary tightrope.

Midfielder Jobe Bellingham tops their card count with 10 (nine yellows and one red) and looks overpriced to enter referee Will Finnie’s notebook.
