Sheffield Wednesday v Plymouth Argyle: Prediction, Tips and Odds

Sheffield Wednesday and Plymouth Argyle prepare to get their 2024/25 Championship season underway when they clash at Hillsborough on Sunday.

Wednesday looked destined for the drop for the majority of last season but a run of four wins and two draws in their final six games saw them finish three points clear of danger.

The Owls will be looking to get off to a winning start on Sunday as they entertain Plymouth, who finished one place and two points behind their hosts last term after winning promotion in the previous campaign.

Sheffield Wednesday v Plymouth Argyle betting tips and predictions

Sheffield Wednesday to win - 4/5

Danny Rohl took charge of Wednesday in October and the coming campaign will be his first full season in the hot-seat.

The German lost five of his first six games as manager but the South Yorkshire outfit clicked into gear in the second half of the season and enjoyed a fantastic end to the season as they won eight of their final 14 games and lost just three - with two of those defeats coming against teams who finished in the top three.

Wednesday will feel they can avoid a repeat of last season’s relegation scrap and an opening day meeting with Plymouth looks a very winnable assignment.

Argyle should have a new manager bounce of their own after appointing England legend Wayne Rooney over the summer. That boost may not translate into points on opening day, however, as the Pilgrims were poor travellers last term and their results at Home Park will probably define their season.

Plymouth won just three times on the road last season, losing 13 times, and only 16 of their 51 points in total came away from home. Wednesday have been active in the transfer market over the summer and after last season’s strong finish they should be able to start the new campaign strongly, so a home win looks the most likely result in this solitary Championship fixture on Sunday.

Josh Windass to score anytime - 5/2

Wednesday midfielder Josh Windass scored a modest six goals in 25 Championship games last season but three of those came in the final three games of the campaign.

The 30-year-old struggled with various injury issues last term but looks ready to go this year after featuring regularly in pre-season, including 74 minutes in the Owls’ last friendly against Spanish outfit Leganes, and he stands out as a potential anytime scorer here.

Windass had 12 goals in 37 games in League One in 2022/23 and the last time he had a full season in the Championship he weighed in with nine, so he could be a key attacking threat for Wednesday in the season ahead and he can open his scoring account in the curtain-raiser on Sunday.

Jordan Houghton to be booked - 21/10

This may be an opening day fixture but both sides will view this as a chance to take some points off a key rival, given how close the teams were last season in the final table.

Plymouth’s players will be keen to impress in Rooney’s first competitive game in charge and that could lead to a physical game with a few cards being dished out, and visiting midfielder Jordan Houghton could be a contender for a booking.

The defensive midfielder was booked six times last season, with one of those cards coming against Wednesday, and averaged 1.2 fouls-per-game away from home in the Championship.
