Sheffield Wednesday v Cambridge United Prediction: Owls 19/20 to impress for Hamshaw

Back-to-back 2-0 defeats at Notts County and Doncaster was all it took for Sheffield Wednesday's owners to pull the plug on Henrik Pedersen's 18-month reign, handing coach Matt Hamshaw control for Tuesday's visit of Cambridge United.

There seems to be relief at Hillsborough that Pedersen has gone, with too many poor performances this season from a side who are more than capable of turning on the style.

Cambridge are less stylish and far more physical and will provide a searching test as they have throughout their 10-game unbeaten run which was ended by Plymouth Argyle at the weekend.

Both sides go into this League One fixture handily placed - Wednesday are eighth, two points behind sixth-placed Cambridge but with a game in hand.

Sheffield Wednesday v Cambridge United Prediction

Best Bet: Sheffield Wednesday to win @ 19/20

There is no denying Cambridge have been outstanding since winning promotion and thoroughly deserve to be basking in the play-off places.

They are unbeaten away - including a cracking 2-1 victory at Bradford City - and boast a physicality and directness which makes them hard to play against.

However, they could well be going to Hillsborough at a bad time.

Wednesday were awful for a half at Doncaster on Saturday, set up in an odd formation under Pedersen and pretty much beaten by half-time. It was the result that broke the camel's back for the board.

Matt, a former Owls player and Rotherham boss, won't make that tactical blunder against the U's and two away defeats in a week still look like a blip from a side who had won six and drawn the other three of their previous nine.

They don't concede goals at Hillsborough, whereas Cambridge concede everywhere; they have one clean sheet in 16, a leakiness that is unsustainable and a worry.

Alternative Bet: Over 9.5 corners @ 8/11

Wednesday win an average of 5.4 corners per home game and will be positive under Hamshaw, who will be keen to change the mood in S6.

Cambridge win an average of 6.8 corners per away game and know the importance of set-plays. They are a strong team.

This is arguably United's biggest away game of the season at a Wednesday side who need to show intent after a pair of reverses.

Sheffield Wednesday v Cambridge United Bet Builder Tip

  • Callum Slattery or Barry Bannan to score

  • Over 4.5 Cambridge corners

  • Goals range 2-6

    Pays 12/1

Callum Slattery will return from a one-game ban to play alongside Barry Bannan in the Owls' midfield.

It's an area where Wednesday would hope to dominate and these two key ball-players can also be a threat in and around the visitors' box.

Slattery has three goals this season and is averaging 1.2 shots per game; Bannan has two in his last five and is averaging 1.4 shots per game.

Cambridge's away form is impressive - the only unbeaten side on their travels in the division - and they don't do it by hanging on. They average 6.8 corners per away games can tot up five as a minimum.

Finally, all bar two of Cambridge's 16 matches this season have yielded a 2-6 total goals range.
