After failing to get out of their group at Euro 2024, Scotland will hope for a better time in the Nations League as they prepare to kick off their Group A1 campaign against Poland at Hampden Park.
Falling at the first hurdle this summer was a blow for Scotland, who had hoped to spring one or two surprises in Germany.
But they can continue to test themselves at a high level over the next few months as they rub shoulders with Poland, Portugal and Croatia in the Nations League.
Poland are used to being a top tier Nations League side, but they too had a tough time at Euro 2024, taking just one point from their three games.
Both teams have a point to prove but Scotland are the 11/8 favourites to get back to winning ways. Poland are 9/4 to post an away victory and the sides 21/10 to share the points.
Scotland to win - 27/20
Scotland should not be too despondent about their group stage exit at Euro 2024 and they can bounce back with a Nations League victory over Poland at Hampden Park.
Large numbers of Scotland fans travelled to Euro 2024 and were ultimately disappointed after seeing their team lose to Germany 5-1 on the opening night and then Hungary 1-0 in their crucial third game, while in between they did manage a creditable 1-1 draw with Switzerland.
However, Scotland’s early exit should not obscure the excellent work done by their head coach, Steve Clarke, since his appointment in May 2019.
The mere presence of Scotland in the top tier of the Nations League is an indication of the progress made under Clarke’s tenure.
Before his arrival, Scotland had not played major tournament football since their group stage exit at the 1998 World Cup.
Under the 61-year-old they qualified for Euro 2020 and Euro 2024 and have moved up to the top tier of the Nations League for the first time.
Their next challenge is to try to take the next step by reaching the knockout rounds of a major tournament.
Their first opportunity comes in the Nations League as they strive to secure a top-two group finish and clinch a place in next year’s quarter-finals.
Poland will have the same ambition, but they look like a team in transition with star striker Robert Lewandowski approaching the end of his career and no obvious candidate waiting in the wings to be their next talisman.
The Poles scraped through to Euro 2024 with a penalty shootout success over Wales but they had a tough time in Germany and their struggles look set to continue.
John McGinn to score at any time - 15/4
Scotland’s obvious area of weakness is at the top end of the pitch, but they have some talented midfielders, including Aston Villa’s John McGinn, who will be keen to notch against Poland.
McGinn is an energetic, feisty player, who loves to get forward and has flourished at international level with 18 goals in 69 games.
He is the top scorer in the squad and may come up with another match-winning moment against the Poles.
Over 2.5 goals - 13/10
Scotland like to get on the front foot in home games and their positive approach has contributed to some high-scoring outcomes.
Three of Scotland’s last four home matches have generated at least four goals, so it seems a reasonable approach to back over 2.5 goals against Poland at 13/10.
